USAF Boeing C-17A Visits Reading Regional Airport

Berks County couldn’t help but look up at the sky Tuesday evening as a large military plane was spotted flying around the area. Catching the attention of Berks Weekly staff, photojournalist Jason Hugg spotted the plane heading towards the Reading Regional Airport. Hugg found the plane on the runway waiting to take off.

The plane turned out to be a US Air force Boeing C-17A. Based out of Dover Air Force Base, the Globemaster III has a top speed of 590 mph, weighs 282,400 lbs, and has a range of 6,456 miles. The plane is designed to tackle distance, destination and heavy, oversized payloads in unpredictable conditions.

Military aircraft frequently fly across Berks County. However, what caught most people’s attention was how low the aircraft was. Posting to social media, several Berks residents were surprised to see such a large aircraft suddenly above them.

“My wife and I were in our driveway and I heard it coming a minute before it flew over our house. It was low and I said that is too big to land at any of the airports around here but I was wrong” said Jerry Halteman on Facebook.

“Saw it while driving on 61. Was wondering why there was a giant ass plane flying overhead. Never seen them that big flying around the airport except for the WWII airshow, especially that low even” said Shannon Young on Facebook.

“Thanks everyone for letting me know what was going on. At least I know I wasn’t imagining this. That aircraft was low” said Teresa Benne on Facebook.
