Reading City Council President Donna Reed is asking for voters’ continued support as she campaigns for reelection, bringing decades of leadership, community advocacy, and hands-on involvement to the role. With a track record of service stretching back to 2001, Reed emphasizes that experience matters when navigating the challenges of city government.
Reed, a Reading native and seven-time elected council member, was first appointed as council president in January 2023 to complete the term of the late Jeff Waltman. Now, she is running to retain the position in her own right, pledging to uphold the principles of accountability, checks and balances, and continued progress for the city.
“We’ve made great strides, but we’re not done yet,” said Reed. “I will continue to ensure that City Council remains a strong, independent body that represents the people of Reading and works collaboratively to move our city forward.”
A Legacy of Protecting Reading’s Treasures
Throughout her tenure, Reed has been at the forefront of key initiatives that preserve and enhance the city’s landmarks and public spaces. One of her proudest accomplishments was her role in saving Antietam Lake in the early 2000s. Working alongside city and county officials, Reed helped ensure the land was protected for future generations and incorporated into the Berks County Park System.
Her commitment extends to the city’s most iconic symbol — the Pagoda. As a member of the Foundation for the Reading Pagoda, Reed has been instrumental in securing funding for vital improvements, ensuring this beloved landmark continues to be a cherished destination.
Supporting Public Safety and Community Initiatives
Public safety remains a cornerstone of Reed’s platform. She has supported the Reading Police Department through funding and community programs, such as the Reading Junior Police Academy, and has been a board member of Crime Alert Berks County for over two decades.
Reed continues to advocate for strengthening the city’s codes enforcement, addressing blight, and enhancing economic development through public-private partnerships.
Championing Reading’s Cultural and Economic Assets
Reed’s leadership has also played a vital role in the ongoing improvements at FirstEnergy Stadium. Having attended games there since childhood, she has helped lead city investments into the stadium’s infrastructure and event spaces, ensuring it remains a vibrant community hub.
A Career Rooted in Service and Communication
With a background in journalism, communications, and civic engagement, Reed has dedicated her career to serving the Reading community. Her involvement with local boards and organizations reflects her deep commitment to the city’s future. She also serves as a board member of Crime Alert Berks County and as a trustee of the Berks History Center, reflecting her long-standing commitment to public safety and local history.
Looking Ahead
As she seeks reelection, Reed remains focused on addressing Reading’s most pressing challenges — from public safety to infrastructure improvements and downtown revitalization.
“The progress we’ve made is only the beginning,” she said. “With your support, we can continue building a stronger, safer, and more vibrant Reading for all.”
Donna Reed has been endorsed by the Reading-Berks Association of Realtors.
