The City of Reading has relaunched its façade improvement program, offering grants of up to $5,000 to help homeowners in the Prince Historic District preserve and enhance their properties.
The pilot program is open exclusively to single-family, owner-occupied homes in the district, located on the city’s south side between South Sixth and Seventh streets, from Franklin to Canal streets (view map provided by the city). The goal is to preserve the neighborhood’s historic architecture while boosting property values, supporting local contractors, and fostering community pride.
“This program gives Prince Historic District owner occupied homeowners a great opportunity to maintain their homes and preserve the character of one of Reading’s most historic neighborhoods. We’re excited to help residents invest in their properties and keep our city’s history alive” said Dave Barr, City of Reading Community Development Director.
Eligible projects include exterior work such as window and door replacements, porch repairs, painting, brick or stone restoration, and wood trim improvements. Homeowners must contribute a 5% match toward the cost of renovations. For example, a $5,000 grant would require a $250 contribution from the homeowner.
All projects must comply with historic preservation guidelines and receive approvals from the City’s Historic Preservation Office, the Historical Architectural Review Board, and the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office to ensure that improvements blend with the neighborhood’s original character.
Applications are due by August 31, 2025, and are available online at readingpa.gov. View application in English or Español. Applicants will be contacted a few days after submission to confirm eligibility and review plans. Homeowners are required to address any code issues before façade work can begin and must remain in the home for at least one year after project completion, or the grant must be repaid.
