Death investigation underway in Wernersville

Lower Heidelberg Township and Berks County authorities are investigating the death of a 53-year-old Wernersville woman found unresponsive in her home over the weekend.

According to the Berks County District Attorney’s Office, officers from the Lower Heidelberg Township Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 600 block of Fairmont Avenue at approximately 7:11 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, for a report of an unresponsive female.

Upon arrival, police located a deceased woman inside the home. She was later identified as Candice Y. Riehl, 53, who officials said was the sole resident of the property.

The District Attorney’s Office said the circumstances surrounding Riehl’s death remain under investigation. The inquiry is being led by the Lower Heidelberg Township Police Department with assistance from detectives from the Berks County District Attorney’s Office. The Berks County District Attorney Forensic Services Unit processed the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at Tower Health Reading Hospital.

Authorities had previously asked for public assistance in locating next of kin, who have since been identified.
