Black Canvas Poetry, in partnership with ThePoetSmiley, is set to kick off the new year with The Bless the Mic Mini Slam: Espresso Yourself Open Mic 2026 – Part 1, a high-energy spoken word showcase taking place on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Alvernia University’s Francis Hall.

This free, live mini poetry slam marks the first event in a three-part Bless the Mic series planned for 2026, leading up to the signature Bless the Mic Poetry Slam in June, with a second mini slam scheduled for March. Designed to spotlight both emerging and established voices, the Mini Slam brings together competition, open mic performances, and community connection in an intimate, engaging format.

The evening will feature Chiina Bloodmire, the 2025 Bless the Mic Grand Champion, whose dynamic performances have captivated audiences across the region. In addition to the featured artist, 10 poets will compete before a panel of judges for a $200 first-place cash prize, free entry into the June Bless the Mic Poetry Slam, and a featured performance opportunity at The Zoellner Experience.

Poets from Reading, Allentown, Philadelphia, and New York are expected to compete, highlighting the growing regional reach of the Bless the Mic platform and its commitment to elevating diverse voices through spoken word.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public, however advance registration is required for all attendees, including poets participating in the open mic portion of the evening, to ensure seating availability. Organizers promise an unforgettable night that sets the tone for a powerful year of poetry, artistry, and community engagement.
