Reading’s Christmas on the Mountain expands to unprecedented scale for 2025—possibly its final season

For 34 years, Hillside Playground on North 14th Street has been transformed into a dazzling holiday landmark known lovingly as “Christmas on the Mountain.” The largest free Christmas light display in the United States, this cherished tradition now features over 5 million LED lights and pixels, along with an ever-growing collection of inflatables, vintage displays, modern décor, and immersive character experiences.

This year, organizers have taken the magic to an entirely new level—while also confronting the possibility that 2025 may be the display’s “swan song” season.

“Late this summer, we were informed by a City of Reading official that upcoming construction and renovations to the Hillside Pool would require us to revisit the size, scope, and potentially the future of Christmas on the Mountain,” said Tim Profit, President of the Savage Auto Group and longtime organizer of the event.

“Every year, my team and I push ourselves to make this place more magical, even within the limitations of our footprint,” Profit continued. “A significant reduction in that footprint would make it extremely difficult to produce the experience our community has come to love.”

Profit emphasized the unwavering support the event receives from the Mayor’s Office, Mayor Eddie Moran personally, City Council, the Reading Police and Fire Departments, and nearly every city department.

The Reading High School Marine Corps JROTC once again plays a vital role, dedicating months to setup work beginning in September. Their cadets and volunteers will continue preparing the site right up until opening night on Friday, November 28th, when they transition into running daily operations of the display.

Christmas on the Mountain is made possible through the generosity of local businesses. The Savage Auto Group and Axcess Industries provide the bulk of the funding and resources that keep this Reading tradition alive.

Christmas on the Mountain opens Friday, November 28, 2025 at 5:00 PM and runs nightly through December 23, 2025 with the exception of select Mondays. Admission and parking are always free.
