Local nonprofit leader wins United Way shopping spree in Wyomissing

Ready. Set. Go! One lucky winner raced through the aisles at Redner’s in Wyomissing on Wednesday evening during United Way of Berks County’s annual incentive shopping spree.

The three-minute dash, which began at 6 p.m., was held as a reward for donors who contributed to United Way of Berks County’s annual fundraising campaign. Participants qualified for a chance to win by pledging at least $4 per week, or $208 annually.

“Redner’s is a proud supporter of United Way – their programs make a difference in the lives of countless people throughout the community,” said Eric White, Redner’s Director of Marketing and Communications.

This year’s winner, Beth Garrigan, CEO of Safe Berks, said she was surprised when her name was selected.

“It was such a surprise when I learned my name was drawn as the shopping spree winner,” Garrigan said. “This shopping spree is a special experience because I have the opportunity to put the winnings to great use by providing the items to our agency’s shelter.”

Redner’s has hosted the shopping spree for more than a decade, with winnings typically totaling around $1,000 in groceries. This year, Garrigan walked away with 1,082.90 for SafeBerks.

“Partners like Redner’s is what make Berks County such a special place, and we thank their team for their continued support,” said Tammy White, president of United Way of Berks County.

According to United Way, more than $11 million was raised last year to support community needs across Berks County. The organization said its programs focus on empowering youth, strengthening health, building stability, and providing support during times of crisis.

“Our mission is rooted in improving lives, and our 80+ programs provide help, hope and opportunity for children and families within every corner of our county. We are grateful for our donors and partners helping build a stronger community for all,” White added.

United Way of Berks County’s 2026 campaign is expected to launch in mid-September, with Brad and Tanya Stephenson serving as campaign co-chairs. The organization reports its programs assist more than 190,000 Berks County residents each year.
