State Rep. Manuel Guzman Jr., D-Berks, announced Friday that Safe Berks has received $100,000 in grant funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development to support safety and infrastructure improvements.

The funding will be used for the Safe Berks Sidewalk and Safety Project, which includes safety and security upgrades at the organization’s domestic violence shelter as well as sidewalk repairs.

“I am proud and very excited to secure these funds, which will be used for much-needed critical repairs and upgrades to continue providing a safe haven for our community’s domestic and sexual violence survivors and their families,” Guzman said.

Safe Berks provides services and support to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault throughout Berks County. According to Guzman, the grant will help strengthen the organization’s ability to maintain a secure and supportive environment for those seeking assistance.

“It is deeply rewarding to support initiatives that strengthen the vital services Safe Berks provides. These funds will help advance projects that enhance safety, dignity, and healing for survivors,” Guzman added.

Beth Garrigan, chief executive officer of Safe Berks, said the improvements will directly benefit survivors by strengthening the spaces and resources available to them.

“Projects like these have a direct impact on survivors by strengthening the environments, resources, and services that help them rebuild their lives,” Garrigan said. “We deeply appreciate Rep. Guzman’s partnership, his willingness to lend his voice, and his commitment to advancing these efforts. We are grateful for his continued advocacy for this important work and for standing with us in our mission to serve survivors and their families.”

Guzman also noted that part of the services provided by his office includes helping local organizations access state resources and funding opportunities.

“I want to stress that my office is always here to help local organizations access the resources they need. Whether it’s nonprofits, businesses, or other community groups, my team can help navigate state programs and remove barriers so projects like this can succeed,” he said.
