Reading mayor addresses social media misinformation about ICE activity

Reading Mayor Eddie Morán issued a public statement Wednesday addressing misinformation circulating on social media regarding alleged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in the city.

According to the mayor, a video currently being shared online shows the Berks County Sheriff’s Office serving a warrant, not federal immigration enforcement. City officials confirmed directly with the Sheriff’s Office that the incident did not involve ICE.

Morán said he understands why such images can cause concern, particularly when they are shared without context. He emphasized that public safety in Reading relies on trust between residents and local government, which he said is built through clear policies and consistent action.

The mayor reiterated that, by ordinance and long-standing practice, the Reading Police Department does not enforce federal immigration law. He stated that city police officers are focused on protecting and serving all residents.

Morán warned that misinformation can create unnecessary fear and confusion, which he said undermines public safety. He encouraged residents to rely on verified information and trusted sources when assessing reports shared online.

The statement also noted that federal agencies do not notify cities or states in advance of their operations, limiting the ability of local governments to independently confirm rumors about federal enforcement activity.

Morán said his administration remains committed to keeping Reading safe and united, and to ensuring that every resident feels protected.
