Rodent droppings on shelf with bags of chips in retail area: Restaurant Inspections, August 7, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On July 30, 2025, Cristina’s Family Restaurant, located at 500 Hoch Road, Blandon, was inspected and found with the following violation: Meatballs, tomato sauce and cheese sauce were held at 98 °F, in the cookline area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Unit was unplugged. Chef plugged it back in and reheated all items to at least 165 degrees and will put back into hot hold. Corrected. Food facility does not have available chlorine sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate chlorine sanitizer concentration.

On July 30, 2025, Caba Grocery Store LLC, located at 1101 North 9th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: An open employee’s beverage container was observed in deli cooler area, a food preparation area. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the refrigerator, is not being date marked. hood vents was damaged, contacted fire marshal the kitchen was closed until vents are fixed. The deli slicer had food residue build up, the proper cleaning regiment was not being applied. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the food prep area.

On July 30, 2025, Burkholder’s Farm Market, located at 630 Topton Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Non-food contact surfaces of the fan guards in the walk-in cooler were not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Food facility inspection indicates insect activity in the market areas, but facility does not have a pest control program.

On July 30, 2025, Ady Cakes, located at 631 Penn Avenue, West Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Corrected.

On July 31, 2025, Shubert’s Best, located at 5836 Four Point Road, Bethel, was inspected and found with the following violation: The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Observed no chemical sanitizer being used on equipment and utensils after washing and rinsing them, and prior to use. Food facility is using an approved non-public water system, but does not have current laboratory testing results for water potability. Food facility hot water heater is not producing enough hot water to supply sinks for proper hand washing and warewashing at the time of inspection. Hand wash sinks (retail area and restroom) do not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. *Note: PIC stated hot water had been turned off. PIC turned on hot water during inspection, and a water temperature above 85°F was measured at the retail area sink. The hot water tank is leaking heavily when turned on, so it cannot remain on. Facility does not have continual access to a hot water supply at the time of inspection. Ceiling above 3-bay warewashing sink is not in good repair. Ceiling surface is exposed with insulation falling through the opening. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of rodents/insect activity. -Rodent droppings observed on cardboard lining shelving with bags of chips in the retail area. -Dead cockroaches observed in the 3-bay warewashing area. Floor surfaces in the storage room/warewashing area of the food facility is extremely dirty, dusty, and in need of cleaning.

On July 31, 2025, Juliana’s, located at 776 Fritztown Road, Sinking Spring, was inspected and found with the following violation: The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Boil water notice is not being followed. Food facility is not complying with “Boil Water” advisory issued by the DEP Public Water System and is using water which does not meet standards for drinking water in their soda dispensers. Soda dispenser needs to be turned off and bottled sodas must be used for consumers. Corrected PIC turned off the machine. Hand sanitizer is not available at the hand wash sinks due to the boil water notice.

On July 31, 2025, Burger King #30004, located at 8603 Lancaster Avenue, Bethel, was inspected and found with the following violation: Exhaust hood filters observed with an accumulation of grease and debris; in need of cleaning. Grease and food debris observed along floor surfaces and under equipment in the cooking area.

On August 1, 2025, J A Buffet, located at 1752 Tilden Drive, Hamburg, was inspected and found with the following violation: Several raw animal foods were stored above ready to eat foods in the walk-in cooler. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety foods prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, were not being date marked. Five fryer baskets were observed with broken wires at the fryers. Corrected. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired and is no longer valid.

On August 1, 2025, Blue Marsh Restaurant & Pizzeria, located at 5027 Bernville Road, Bernville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Several raw animal foods were stored above ready to eat foods in the cooler drawer at the cook line. Corrected. Mushroom soup was held at 112 °F, in the prep area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Soup was reheated on the stove and then placed back into the hot hold unit. Corrected. Lights are not shielded or shatter proof over the prep/ dry storage area.

On August 1, 2025, Bally Family Diner, located at 1605 PA-100, Barto, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a large build-up of grease on the wall, floor, the grill, and fryer of the cookline area.

On August 1, 2025, Arby’s #5229, located at 15506 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Frozen foods observed not maintained in a frozen state in the Walk-in freezer. Ambient air temp was above 44 degrees. Walk-in freezer must be repaired before frozen food order is received. All foods held in the walk-in freezer were observed above 38°F. All TCS foods were thrown in the dumpster. Corrected.

On August 4, 2025, Corner Food Mart, located at 3675 Pricetown Road, Fleetwood, was inspected and found with the following violation: Prepackaged sandwiches made in the facility are not properly labeled with the ingredients/allergens. The original packing film on the stainless steel tables in the food preparation area has not been removed and is becoming damaged/torn. This is not an easily cleanable surface/material. Thermometers for ensuring proper temperature of equipment are not available or readily accessible in the two Red Bull refrigeration units used to store sandwiches. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the food preparation area. Corrected.

On August 4, 2025, Casa de Empanadas TFS3, located at the Kutztown Fair in Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed bottled drinks stored directly on the ground. Corrected.

On August 5, 2025, V & S Sandwiches West, located at 4301 Penn Avenue, Sinking Spring, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips for the sanitizer tablets being used at the 3-compartment sink. Observed dirt and old food debris on the floor under the shelving and equipment in the back area. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the back area. Corrected. Working containers (spray bottles) in the back area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On August 5, 2025, Tiki Bar, located at 1150 Manatawny Road, Boyertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Salads and cut produce in the walk-in-cooler are being stored open with no covering. Observed fish in reduced oxygen packaging thawing without being removed from the packaging. Facility threw out the fish. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the walk-in-cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened.

On August 5, 2025, Popeyes #14745, located at 4628 Penn Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Thermometer for ensuring proper temperature of equipment is not available or readily accessible in one of the small reach-in refrigerators. Corrected.

On August 6, 2025, Weis Markets #078, located at 15260 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed an accumulation of dust/dirt on the condenser fan covers in the produce preparation room.

On August 6, 2025, Redner’s Warehouse Market #89, located at 300 Kenhorst Plaza, Shillington, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility is using or offering for sale, canned beverages containing THC and CBD, an unapproved additive or an approved additive at elevated levels. Refrigerated ready-to-eat time/temperature control for safety food (Chocolate milk) was offered for sale past the sell by date of 8/4/25. Corrected. Observed a buildup of apparent slime on the exterior of the hose connected to the back of the ice machine in the produce prep room. Corrected. Observed a buildup of apparent slime and mold in the grate system lettuce produce case.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Leiby’s Ice Cream in Wernersville, Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood, El Buen Sazon Restaurant in Reading, Burger King #4750 in Kutztown, Bern Township Lions Pool in Leesport, Zipf’s Candies by Sweet Surprises in West Reading, Monte Lauro European Group in Temple, Covered Bridge Farmstead in Oley, Camp Swatara Family Camping Center, Berks Area Youth Recreation – Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading, Subway/Auntie Anne’s in Hamburg, Rico Casa Fort Inn in Hamburg, Lesher Memorial Community Park in Shartlesville, Way-Har Farms in Kutztown, Vince’s Steaks in Kutztown, Tony’s Steaks Sandwiches in Kutztown, Redner’s Warehouse Market #50 in Reading, Longacre’s Modern Dairy in Barto, Kauffman’s BBQ Chicken in Bethel, Second Nature Health Food Store in Kutztown, Friendship Fire Company in Mohnton, Fluff & All The Good Stuff in Bally.
