Self-serve milkshake machine has buildup of apparent mold on nonfood contact surface: Restaurant Inspections, October 14, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On October 20, 2025, Sajal Hot Chicken and Gyro Grill, located at 164 West Main Street, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Floor perimeters in the prep area, behind and under equipment, observed with food debris and residue; in need of cleaning.

On October 20, 2025, Hamburg Area High School, located at 701 Windsor St, Hamburg, PA 19526, was inspected and found with the following violation: The hot water used for sanitizing in the mechanical warewashing machine did not reach 180°F (or 165°F for stationary rack). Correcting, calling back all the dishes to run through sanitizer in the three bay sink until service can be done on the dish machine.

On October 20, 2025, Aramark – KU South Dining Hall, located at 15200 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Temperature logs for cold-holding and/or hot-holding are not completed in the cereal station and pasta station areas. A food contact surface, the ice dispenser on the soda fountain machine in the cereal station area, was observed to have black residue and was not clean to sight and touch.

On October 20, 2025, Applebee’s #3339, located at 5600 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: The interior of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Manager started the process to clean the machine during this inspection. The grout is deteriorated between the floor tiles at the cooking line.

On October 21, 2025, Slicer’s Deli, located at 180 Old Swede Road, Douglassville, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the walk-in cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the walk-in cooler, is not being date marked. Corrected. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Corrected.

On October 21, 2025, Royal Farms #402, located at 1340 Ben Franklin Highway, Douglassville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed soda machine nozzles, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Observed the self-serve milkshake machine to have a buildup of apparent mold on the nonfood contact surface. Corrected. Single use containers not stored inverted to prevent contamination by the walk-in freezer. Corrected. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in warewashing area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.

On October 21, 2025, Douglassville Hotel, located at 8 Old Swede Road, Douglassville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Eggs stored above ready to eat food in the refrigerator by the ice machine. Corrected. Multiple food ingredient storage containers, in the dry storage area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Observed multiple food stored directly on the floor in walk-in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the refrigerators and Bain Marie, is not being date marked. Corrected. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the refrigerators, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Observed single use containers being used as scoops in the dry bulk ingredient bins. Corrected.

On October 21, 2025, Dorada Restaurant & Bar LLC, located at 201 West Lancaster Avenue, Shillington, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple foods were held at 45°F, in the salad refrigerator area, rather than 41°F or below as required.

On October 21, 2025, Chipotle #4975, located at 15 Maplewood Drive, Douglassville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food ingredient storage containers, in the front service area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Corrected. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the ware washing area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting).

On October 22, 2025, Turkey Hill Minit Market #059, located at 50 West Main Street, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Half gallon of fat free milk was observed with an expiration date of 10/20/2025 and was for sale in the cooler. Corrected, pulled form shelf. Two soda nozzles, a food contact surface, were observed to have black organic matter and were not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.

On October 22, 2025, Martha Deli Grocery LLC, located at 1025 Greenwich Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Cooked food was held at 117 °F, in the area, rather than 135°F or above as required.

On October 22, 2025, Liberty Tap Room, located at 237 Butter Lane, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the dishwasher. The interior of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to have residue and was not clean to sight and touch. There are spills and other food debris on the floor under the shelves in the walk-in cooler. Observed an accumulation of dirt/debris on the floor under equipment in the kitchen and near the water heater. Window, in the corner of the cooking area, is open, unscreened, and does not protect against the entry of pests. Part of the window is screened, but the screen is damaged. Working container (spray bottle) in bar area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On October 22, 2025, the Cafeteria at Reading Hospital, located at 420 South 5th Avenue, West Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed four quarts of skim milk offered for sale beyond the sell-by date of 10/20/2025. Corrected immediately.

On October 23, 2025, North End Rod & Gun Association, located at 2010 Fairmont Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the refrigerator, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Commercial needs documents on regular cleaning by professional.

On October 23, 2025, Mario’s Pizza, located at 159 South Reading Avenue, Boyertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Clothes observed being washed in buckets in ware washing sink. REPEAT VIOLATION. Observed bedding and clothing materials in the food facility, indicating use of the food facility as living or sleeping quarters.

On October 23, 2025, Friendship Hook & Ladder Fire Co. #1, located at 10 Warwick Street, Boyertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the walk-in-cooler, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration in the bar area. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the cookline area, stored uncovered or not inverted. Observed the fryer, grill, and vent hood has a large build-up of grease in the cookline area.

On October 25, 2025, Dunkin, located at 3634 Pottsville Pike, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: One employee wearing hair restraint (visor) underneath the upper layer of hair. Consider alternate hair restraint such as a hairnet. Food dispensing utensil in bulk bin non-potentially hazardous food observed stored inside the food container with handles not above the food. Observed wet wiping cloth in front prep area, not being stored in sanitizer solution. The sanitizer bucket is dated/marked 10/25/25, 9:17AM-1:17PM, but contained no sanitizer solution. Ice scoop holder lower section soiled inside. Leaking faucet at coffee prep area sink.

On October 25, 2025, Aldi, located at 3520 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed raw ground beef stored above raw whole beef. Per Food Code Guidelines, because ground beef is cooked to 155 degrees F. and whole beef is cooked to 145 degrees F., ground beef should be stored below whole cuts of beef.

On October 27, 2025, Dollar Tree #1437, located at 4400 Shillington Plaza, Unit 2B, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed multiple foods stored directly on the floor in the walk-in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Observed excessive trash on the ground in the areas around the trash receptacles.

On October 27, 2025, Brubaker Bargains, located at 1030 Church Road, Womelsdorf, was inspected and found with the following violation: Two half gallons of nonfat milk were observed on the sales floor with a sell by date of October 26, 2025. Corrected and removed from sales floor.

On October 27, 2025, 10 West Pizzeria, located at 10 West Penn Avenue, Wernersville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired (4/10/2024) and is no longer valid.

On October 28, 2025, Mama Licha Mexican + Italian Restaurant, located at 14949 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Location was listed as out of compliance. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Food facility does not employ a certified food employee as required. Food facility is using an approved non-public water system, but does not have current laboratory testing results for water potability. Nitrate/Nitrite testing not provided. Total Coliform testing provided and in compliance.

On October 28, 2025, Asian Cuisine, located at 15260 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Non-food contact surfaces are not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil, including food prep sink air gap, prep area walls, cooking line grill area. The hand wash sink located in the women’s restroom does not have water at a temperature of at least 85°F. The water temperature measured at 68°F at the time of inspection. Pipe connection under the hand wash sink observed leaking when water is running. PIC instructed to discontinue use of the women’s restroom until the sink is repaired and functioning properly. Use men’s restroom only. Rear door located of the food facility has a gap, is not tight-fitting, and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals. Soiled mop water is not being disposed of in a timely manner after use. Mop is not being hung to air dry.
