The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On September 16, 2025, National Fresh Supermarket, located at 810 Oley Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering. Observed frozen food stored directly on the floor in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Toilet room soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser was both empty.
On September 17, 2025, Taqueria El Carreton Mexican Food #2, located at 817 Oley Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, cooler, is not being date marked. Prepped Food in the cooler and the bain marie area stored open with no covering. Observed prepped food stored directly on the floor in cooler area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. No hand soap in the men’s room. Mops are not being hung to air dry.
On September 17, 2025, Chapel Hill Golf Course, located at 2023 Old Lancaster Pike, Sinking Spring, was inspected and found with the following violations: The interior kick plate of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to pink mold/slime and was not clean to sight and touch. Soda nozzle at the bar area, a food contact surface, was observed to have slime build up and was not clean to sight and touch. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired (8/29/2024) and is no longer valid. The handwash sink in the kitchen area does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air-drying device.
On September 17, 2025, Ave Maria Deli and Grocery, located at 706 North 9th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Prepped Food in the bain marie area stored open with no covering. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. The handwashing sink in the prep area was not operable. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, is not being date marked.
On September 19, 2025, Crooked Hen, located at 2233 Lancaster Pike, Shillington, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple foods, refrigerated, ready to eat time temperature control for safety foods in the Bain Maries and walk-in cooler area, were date-marked by the facility, but were beyond the 7 day use or sell by date and requires discarding. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in multiple refrigerators, is not being date marked. Corrected. Multiple foods were held at 44°F, in the small refrigerator by slicer, rather than 41°F or below as required. Corrected.
On September 19, 2025, Brooklyn Place, located at 101 Fifth Avenue, West Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility has an employee that has taken food safety training program; however, the food safety program was not an ANSI/CFP accredited Certified Food Manager program. Observed several food items stored directly on the floor in the side storage room, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Food facility has test strips to monitor chlorine-based sanitizer, but does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the 3-compartment sink when using the sanitizer tablets.
On September 19, 2025, Brecknock Elementary School, located at 1332 Alleghenyville Road, Knauers, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple food items, refrigerated, ready to eat time temperature control for safety food in the double door refrigerator area, was date-marked by the facility, but was beyond the 7-day use or sell by date and requires discarding. Corrected. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the double door refrigerator, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Corrected. Can opener, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch.
On September 22, 2025, Wawa Food Market #8051, located at 515 Lowland Road and Route 61, Hamburg, was inspected and found with the following violation: Blue raspberry Icee nozzle, a food contact surface, was observed to have black organic matter and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in clean dish storage area, stored wet in a manner that does not allow for draining and/or air drying (wet nesting). Corrected.
On September 23, 2025, Twin Valley Middle School, located at 770 Clymer Hill Road, Elverson, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed two deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Corrected. Observed four boxes food stored directly on the floor in walk-in cooler, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Corrected.
On September 24, 2025, Daniel Boone Middle School, located at 1845 Weavertown Road, Douglassville, was inspected and found with the following violation: Burgers in the front refrigerator stored open with no covering. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the front refrigerator, is not being date marked. Corrected. Food facility is not removing dead or trapped pests from control devices frequently, as evidenced by observed old / decaying rodent in pest control device in the dry storage area. Corrected.
On September 24, 2025, Camillo’s Italian Restaurant and Bar, located at 264 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the refrigerated units not being date marked. Assorted foods in the two hold units were held at 65-103 °F, at the cookline and prep area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Corrected, food is being reheated. Food facility does not have available quat sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration.
On September 24, 2025, Arby’s #5229, located at 15506 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, was inspected and found with the following violation: The drip tray at the soda machine in the dining room was observed with mold and is not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of mold and debris. Corrected.
On September 25, 2025, Wawa #8179, located at 10 Bernville Road, Robesonia, was inspected and found with the following violation: Icee nozzle was observed with black organic matter and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected.
On September 25, 2025, The Other Farm and Forge, located at 128 East Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required at Bain Maries in the cookline area. Severely dented canned food items observed in the basement storage area and intended for use in the food facility. The cookline area of the food facility is extremely dirty, and in need of cleaning as evidenced by the large amount of grease build-up on the equipment, walls, and floor. Observed the French fry maker with a large build-up of dried debris on the cutting surface of the maker.
On September 25, 2025, Hipoke Ramen, located at 520 East Lancaster Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: The facility was listed as out of compliance. Raw chicken was stored above ready to eat food in the walk-in cooler. Corrected. Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the front Bain Marie, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the Bain Maries, are not being date marked. Facility had test strips that were wet and had apparent mold growth. Strips were no longer able to be used. On September 25, 2025, Exeter Family Restaurant, located at 4800 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Scoops being stored in the drink ice at the front soda stations with the handles touching the ice. Corrected. Women’s restroom is not provided with a covered waste receptacle(s). Exit door located in the kitchen area of the food facility has a door frame that is deteriorated creating a gap at the bottom, left-hand side. This door does not protect against the entry of pests. Working container (spray bottle) in the server area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.
On September 25, 2025, Borelli’s Creperie, Deli & Market, located at 15 Village Center Drive, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a slime like build up on the nonfood contact surface of the ice machine. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in the Bain Marie in the front service area, is not being date marked. Corrected. Multiple foods were held at 43.5°F, in the front cold hold display unit, rather than 41°F or below as required.
On September 26, 2025, Southern Side Kitchen, located at 10 Summit Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Multiple foods were held at 52°F, in the walk-in cooler and display case area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Corrected. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the dishwash area. Food Facility has a certified food employee, but a certified food employee was not available during all hours of operation, as evidenced by an inability to talk with the certified food employee during this inspection.
On September 26, 2025, Pollo’s Don Juan 2, located at 1665 State Hill Road, Unit 980, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the chlorine-based sanitizer being used at the 3-compartment sink. Observed dirt/debris on the bottom shelf and floor at the food preparation table near the Delfield refrigerator. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Food facility inspection indicates evidence of insect activity in the back food preparation area. Facility may need to increase the frequency of their pest control service.
On September 26, 2025, Penske North, located at 2675 Morgantown Road, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed the ice machine in the dry storage area to have a mold-like buildup on the nonfood contact surfaces. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Multiple foods in ingredient storage containers, in the self-serve area, are not labeled with the common name of the food. Corrected. Marinara sauce, a refrigerated, ready to eat time temperature control for safety food in the walk-in cooler, was date-marked by the facility, but was beyond the 7-day use or sell by date and requires discarding. Corrected.
On September 26, 2025, Hong Kong, located at 51 King Plaza, Oley, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility inspection still indicates evidence of some insect activity in the kitchen area. Facility will continue with their pest control program.
On September 29, 2025, Guru Sub, located at 144 North 8th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Frozen Food in the back freezer area stored open with no covering. Hood ventilation system needs to be serviced. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the food prep area to remind food employees to wash their hands.
On September 29, 2025, El Corillo D LLC, located at 247 North 8th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Prepped Food in the rear cooler area stored open with no covering. Outdated milk in the cooler. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the rear cooler, is not being date marked.
On September 30, 2025, Reading Opera Supermarket LLC, located at 122 North 10th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Frozen Food in the prep area stored open with no covering. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the prep area. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the prep area. Outdated milk in the cooler. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the counter area. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the counter area. Cooked food was held at 124 °F, in the * area, rather than 135°F or above as required.
On October 1, 2025, Santurce Deli Grocery, located at 952 Penn Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the cooler, is not being date marked. Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering. The handwashing sink was leaking from the piping underneath. Cooked food was held at 122 °F, in the * area, rather than 135°F or above as required. No signage above the sink stating EMPLOYEES MUST WASH HANDS.
