The Exeter Township Police took part in a “Move Over Law” safety enforcement operation last week on 422. Partnering with the Highway Safety Network, PennDOT, and AAA, the goal of the operation was increase awareness of Pennsylvania’s Steer Clear Law.
A few weeks ago, Pennsylvania’s General Assembly agreed to change the Steer Clear Law to the Move Over Law, which adds penalties for drivers that don’t properly change lanes when near emergency vehicles on the side of the road.
The law is designed to protect all kinda of “road responders”, including tow truck drivers, police, fire, and EMS. According to the Emergency Responder Safety Institute, in 2019, 44 emergency responders were struck and killed in the United States.
Most recently, in Berks County, Tow Truck Operator/Volunteer Firefighter Tyler Laudenslager, died on Interstate 78 on July 21, 2020.
During the “Move Over” enforcement details on Wednesday night, Exeter Township Officers pulled over 36 vehicles in a span of 3 hours.
Funding for the aggressive driving enforcement operation was provided under a grant through PennDOT.
