A construction worker was injured Wednesday morning after a section of flooring collapsed at Governor Mifflin Middle School, prompting a rescue response from multiple fire departments and EMS crews.
According to the Governor Mifflin School District, the incident occurred around 10 a.m. during renovation work inside the building. A small portion of the floor gave way, causing a contractor — who is not a district employee — to fall through the opening. Firefighters and EMS personnel rescued the worker, who was taken from the scene with a reported leg fracture.
Shillington Fire Company said crews from Spring Township Fire Rescue Services, Western Berks Fire Department, and TowerDirect EMS responded to assist. Using a Stokes basket, responders stabilized, packaged, and extricated the worker in a short amount of time. The scene was cleared in under an hour.
The district said construction in the affected area has been halted pending a structural review. Officials emphasized that students will not have access to active construction zones, and any unfinished spaces used by students are cosmetic only and do not pose a safety risk.
Both Governor Mifflin Middle School and High School will remain under construction throughout the school year. The district said it will continue the projects with minimal disruption to learning while prioritizing student safety.
