Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County has announced that Julissa Matute has joined the BCSS team as the Program Coordinator. The Board of Directors, team members, and volunteers congratulate and welcome Julissa to the BCSS family.
Julissa moved to Berks County when she was six years old. At this young age, her only familiar language was Spanish. Her parents had recently come from Ecuador, and communicating was hard for them. She grew up translating for her parents, allowing her to break the language barrier for her family ensuring her parents’ voices were heard.
During her time in school, she was very involved with the community and grew a passion for being involved. She graduated from Conrad Weiser High School in 2020 and is currently enrolled at Alvernia University. She will graduate in May 2024 with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Science.
In Julissa’s new role as Program Coordinator, her primary focus will be growing the El Poder del Rosado and Soul Survivors programs serving the Latina and African American communities.
“I am very excited to start running ‘El Poder del Rosado,’ which is targeted at Spanish Speakers who have been affected by Breast Cancer and need a support service in their native language” she said.
She will also assist the Program Manager with support groups, programming, and procurement of presenters for topics. She will serve as a staff liaison for the Community Awareness and Program Committees and identify partners, resources and volunteers for all programing.
Julissa resides in Temple with her two children, Adrian and Ai’lani, who keep her busy.
The Board of Directors and staff of BCSS congratulate Julissa on her new role at BCSS and look forward to working with her.
