Genesius Theatre to Stage Tony-Winning Musical ‘Kinky Boots’

This summer, Genesius Theatre is set to dazzle audiences with its production of “Kinky Boots,” the acclaimed musical with a script by Harvey Fierstein and music by Cyndi Lauper. Inspired by a true story and the 2005 film of the same name, “Kinky Boots” follows Charlie Price, a man who inherits a struggling shoe factory and finds an unexpected business partner in Lola, an entertainer in need of durable stilettos. Together, they embark on a journey to save the factory, discovering that they have more in common than they thought.

Co-director Bill Eschbach highlights the show’s blend of humor and heart, emphasizing its timely themes of acceptance and self-discovery during LGBTQIA+ Pride Month. “I believe audiences will enjoy the comedy and very catchy music. Cyndi Lauper’s Tony- and Grammy-winning songs are infectious and will make you want to bop along,” Eschbach said.

Starring Bo Irwin as Charlie and Michael Roman as Lola/Simon, the cast promises to deliver powerful performances. Irwin, who relates deeply to Charlie’s struggles, shared his personal connection to the role. “Like Charlie, I have spent much of my life feeling lost and trying to find myself. Playing Charlie has been challenging but also cathartic and rewarding,” he said.

Roman, returning to the stage after working behind the scenes as a hair and wig artist, finds a kindred spirit in Lola. “Lola is an anomaly, a force, and fearless. I have learned so much from Lola and fall more in love with her every time I put on those boots,” Roman reflected.

The production, co-directed by Bill Eschbach and Christopher Sperat, features a talented creative team including music director Kevin Cooper, choreographer Jennifer Parker Scott, and scenic artist Majory Ewald. Eschbach promises that audiences will feel the “Genesius Difference” through the intimate yet grand experience the theatre offers.
