Community lecture to explore armed conflict in today’s world

The Jewish Community Center in Wyomissing will host a free public lecture on Thursday, Aug. 7, at 7 p.m., featuring University of Chicago political science professor Paul Staniland, Ph.D., speaking on Armed Conflict in the Contemporary World.

The lecture will be held at the JCC, 1100 Berkshire Blvd., Suite 125, Wyomissing. Staniland will provide an overview of current trends in war and political violence, examine the geography of armed conflict, discuss possibilities for conflict resolution, and address areas of emerging global tension.

Staniland, who last spoke to the local community in 2017, specializes in political violence and international security, with a regional focus on South and Southeast Asia. He is the author of Networks of Rebellion: Explaining Insurgent Cohesion and Collapse (2014) and Ordering Violence: Explaining Armed Group-State Relations from Conflict to Cooperation (2021), both published by Cornell University Press.

His research has earned him recognition including the 2022 Karl Deutsch Award from the International Studies Association for contributions to the study of international relations and peace research. He is currently writing a book on the impact of major power competition on “swing” states in Asia and beyond.
