The County of Berks reported Monday that routine water testing at the South Campus facility on East Wyomissing Avenue detected a low level of Legionella bacteria.
The results, received Monday afternoon, prompted the county to schedule remediation efforts for Tuesday, including flushing the water system and conducting additional testing. Officials said they are following the remediation recommendations provided by the testing laboratory.
As a precaution, temporary bathroom facilities and potable drinking water will be available at the campus while remediation and testing take place. County staff will not be required to vacate the building.
The South Campus houses several county offices and services, including the Area Agency on Aging, Assessment, Mapping, the Workforce Development Board, the Planning Commission, the Industrial Development Authority, the Berks County Redevelopment Authority, Community & Economic Development, the Book Bonanza, County Archives, and the office of Magisterial District Justice David Yoch.
This is the second reported detection of Legionella at the South Campus since June. On June 10, the county announced the bacteria had been found in the water system, leading to a closure the following day for remediation. The facility reopened July 7 after testing confirmed the system had been cleared.
