Reading police are investigating a shooting that occurred Sunday evening at the 3rd and Spruce Recreation Center.
According to the Reading Police Department, officers were dispatched to the recreation center shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 1 following reports of gunfire inside the facility.
When officers arrived, they located two individuals who had been struck by gunfire. Police said both victims were transported for medical treatment and their injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening. Initial reports via emergency radio dispatches described one of the victims as a 10-year-old boy who was shot in the leg and taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle.

Authorities said the shooting occurred during a private basketball tournament that was being held at the recreation center by individuals who had rented the facility for the evening.
The department said the investigation remains active and ongoing, and did not release additional details about what led up to the shooting or whether any arrests have been made.
Mayor Eddie Morán issued a statement following the incident.
“My thoughts are with the two individuals who were injured and their families. There is no place for violence in our city. I’m grateful for the quick response from our police officers and first responders, and I’m relieved that the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. It’s disappointing to see how quickly rumors and assumptions can spread before all the facts are known. This is an active investigation, and while I understand people want answers, there are limits to what can be shared right now. We will continue working closely with law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable and keep our community safe.”
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Reading Police Department at 610-655-6116 or submit tips anonymously through Crime Alert Berks at 877-373-9913.
