Dedicated runner hopes to reach milestone with 50th half marathon at Reading Hospital Road Run on October 18

The goal for runner Adam Hughes: 655 miles, 50 races, and one more free banana at the finish line.

As he prepares for his 50th half marathon at this year’s Reading Hospital Road Run on Sunday, Oct. 18, the milestone represents far more than a number.

Hughes’ running journey has been marked by a series of injuries that would have convinced many runners to stop. He wears an ankle brace during runs to manage a tear and relies on orthotics to compensate for ligament damage in his foot. A meniscus tear required knee surgery and has recently flared up again, while multiple calf injuries led to months of physical therapy.

With ongoing knee issues, Hughes said he’s taking a cautious approach to this year’s race and is unsure he will be able to complete it. However, he is still confident on getting the course in. Whether he completes the entire half marathon or adjusts his plans on race day, reaching the starting line for his 50th half marathon milestone after years of setbacks and recovery remains an accomplishment. “We’ll see how it goes,” Hughes said. “I’m excited. The Road Run course is one of my favorites – especially since it moved away from the hilly route. Although, running up Hill Road will always carry bragging rights.”

Hughes will be among the familiar faces at the race, which will benefit Reading Hospital’s Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. It will mark his 10th consecutive Reading Hospital Road Run half marathon, making him one of the event’s longest-running participants. His best time on the course was 1 hour and 43 minutes.

Part of what keeps Hughes coming back is the atmosphere surrounding the Reading Hospital Road Run. The event attracts runners and walkers of all experience levels, from seasoned athletes to those just looking to walk outdoors with family, friends, or community members. For Hughes, the supportive environment and sense of community have made it a race worth returning to year after year.

After logging hundreds of miles, completing dozens of races and overcoming injuries that required braces, orthotics, surgery and months of physical therapy, Hughes has gained a new perspective on running. Personal records matter less than they once did. Simply being healthy enough to take part is something he no longer takes for granted. Now, crossing the starting line at this year’s Reading Hospital Road Run will already feel like a victory.

Reading Hospital Road Run is set to take place on Sunday, October 18, at 8 a.m. at the Reading Hospital Clock Tower. Registration is open through race day, but participants are encouraged to register beforehand at RHRoadRun.com.

Reading Hospital Road Run is supported by the Reading Hospital Foundation.
