Celebrating Women in the Arts: A Special Exhibit at the Holleran Gallery

The Yocum Institute for Arts Education proudly announces an inspiring event, the Women in the Arts Exhibit, to be held on Sunday, March 24th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the esteemed Holleran Gallery. This special exhibit is a tribute to the remarkable women artists who are at the heart of the Yocum Institute’s ongoing mission to enrich and transform our community through art.

As the organization approaches the 90th anniversary of the Yocum Institute for Arts Education on October 15th, 2024, they are reflecting the storied history that began in 1934 under the founding vision of musician and composer Chester Wittell.

The Institute’s direction was soon steered by the indomitable Lila Lerch, who took the helm as managing director in January 1935. Lerch, alongside a dedicated group of women, championed the importance of cultural ideas and opportunities over material wealth, firmly believing in their power to develop character and enhance the enjoyment of life. Despite skepticism from some quarters, their unwavering commitment laid the foundation for what has become a cornerstone of arts education in Berks County.

The Women in the Arts Exhibit is not only a celebration of the Yocum Institute’s rich history but also an acknowledgment of the creative, resourceful, and strong women who have shaped its legacy. Through their dedication and talent, these women have significantly contributed to the Institute’s impact on the community and its evolution in response to changing times.

The community is invited to the Holleran Gallery to experience the beauty and diversity of works created by women artists who are instrumental in furthering the reach of the Yocum Institute and in fostering excellence within the changing community. This event is a testament to the power of art to unite, inspire, and drive positive change, echoing the founding principles that have guided the Institute for nearly a century.
