“A woodshop meets a stone yard”–the slogan of new home decor store Swerl Designs–could not describe the business any more perfectly.
Located at 438 Penn Avenue in West Reading, Swerl Designs features beautiful, completely customizable furniture and home decor of all types, as well as various inventory from other local artisans.
Owner Jason Eyer, a Penn State graduate who received his degree in Landscape Design and Contracting in 2005, spent the last 15 years working as a mason after originally learning the trade in Philadelphia.
Eyer shared that he started a masonry company called A Stone’s Throw in 2014, which is still in operation.
Eyer and his brother, Dave, who is a woodworker, decided to open Swerl Designs this past April after an explosion of initial customer interest in their products.
“Opening the shop was supposed to be 5 years down the road,” he shared, “[but] it got to the point where people were loving our items.”
Deciding to take a risk, the Eyer brothers moved up their business timeline and officially opened Swerl Designs on Penn Avenue on April 17.
Swerl Designs, with Swerl being an acronym for stone, wood, epoxy, resin, and light, features items that Eyer describes as “progressively styled”–such as tables that feature a poured epoxy top, gemstones intricately worked into items, stone bars, and much more. “Everything in the store can be custom made,” he said.
Eyer also noted that he hand-picked each of the ten artisans whose products are showcased at Swerl Designs.
A very special resident vendor is his own thirteen year old daughter, Kaeden, who sells her handmade soaps from her budding small business, Stable Soaps, LLC, at the shop.
Other handmade items include pottery, jewelry, plants, and even blown glass items, made by Eyer’s cousin.
Eyer is looking forward to sharing the future of Swerl Designs on Penn Avenue with consumers, and is anticipating everything from involvement in upcoming festivals and events, to the possibility of hosting onsite classes led by resident artisans.
“Come out and see what we have at our store,” he shared. “Our vendors are unbelievable, and anything [here] is so unique. Everyday you walk in, it looks different–new things come in and out everyday.”
