“We think its really important around the holidays especially to give to food banks, as they have seen a greater need especially with the pandemic” said Ashley Mahaffay, Social Impact Coordinator for GIANT.

“Families should enjoy a meal together, so around thanksgiving, we feel its important for everyone to enjoy a meal, and we’re happy to provide the turkeys.”

Team members also spend the day organizing and restocking shelves of the Helping Harvest warehouse to help them prepare for the busy holiday season.

”GIANT is such a great partner for us and has been for years. We have several programs we run with GIANT that help us feed hungry people in our community” said Jay Worrall, President of Helping Harvest Fresh Food Bank. ”It’s really such a wonderful partnership, I can’t speak enough about it”

”Since COVID has happened, our distributions have increased dramatically and there are really substantial increases in needs in our community. We’re distributing more food than ever before.”

“We anticipate the holiday season to be even more challenging than most of the previous year has been. We really need peoples help now more than ever.”

Worrall added that Helping Harvest will be distributing 5,000 “thanksgiving boxes” at the end of November full of a turkey, pie and dry goods, and a “holiday boxes” in December, with ham, pie, and dry goods.

Each meal kit box costs roughly $45 for Helping Harvest to put together. “We really need people to help us fill those boxes with healthy foods. To the extent that people can help us meet that need, we are great full for their help.”
