Police investigating shooting as homicide in Reading

The Reading Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened Wednesday night, January 12, 2022, in the area of the 200 block of Maple Street.

At approximately 9:41pm, officers responded to the area of South 9th Street and Chestnut as a result of EMS being flagged down for a male who had been shot.

The victim, who was later identified as Jarel Lunsford, 36 years old from Reading, was transported to Reading Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Through the course of the investigation, Police say it was determined that Lunsford was a passenger in a vehicle that had been in the 200 block of Maple Street.

According to investigators, Lunsford had met with an unknown individual in the block, and during the encounter, shots were fired by both Lunsford and the unknown individual.

Shortly thereafter, an additional unknown individual fired shots in the block. Lunsford was placed inside the vehicle by the other occupants and driven from the scene to South 9th Street and Chestnut Street, where they found an EMS unit.

Police say the investigation is still ongoing, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
