The City of Reading held a community clean-up and tree planting event Saturday morning in City Park. Part of the City’s 2021 Clean City Initiative, dozens of volunteers and community organizations filled the park to clean up trash, leaf raking and plant trees.
“Uniting the community is good; doing it for a great cause makes it better,” said Mayor Morán. In 2021, the initiative has hosted four community clean-ups, collected more than 200 bags of trash, including several bulk items.
“My goal is and has always been to host an event where we can come together as a community leaving aside any differences and showing that a common purpose can unite the residents of Reading. We will continue to beautify our City this time by planting 25 trees of five different species in our City Park during this uplifting event.”
Leading the clean up and tree planting effort were representatives from Berks Nature, the City Public Works Department, Reading Area Water Authority, and the City Arborist.
“Berks Nature, whose offices are located in the City of Reading, is thrilled to continue tree planting activities in our home city, particularly in City Park, to help grow a more healthful, climate-resilient City for everyone,” said Kim Murphy, President of Berks Nature.
“By cleaning the air, shading city streets, mitigating runoff, supporting wildlife habitat, and adding natural beauty, urban tree plantings represent not only an investment in our environment but also an investment in the health and well-being of Reading’s residents.”
