A two-story barn was completely destroyed in a fire on Monday morning in Maxatawny Township, Berks County. The incident occurred at approximately 7:55 a.m. at 701 Baldy Road, prompting a second alarm response from fire companies across eastern Berks County and western Lehigh County.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, the barn, measuring approximately 70 by 45 feet, was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Despite the rapid spread of the fire, the property owner managed to rescue all farm animals before responders reached the scene.
Firefighters were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to a nearby residence and another large barn on the property, although both structures sustained heat damage. The fire was brought under control within 45 minutes, but the barn was deemed a total loss. Heavy equipment was utilized to extinguish lingering hot spots and to move smoldering hay bales from inside the barn.
One firefighter was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries sustained while battling the fire. No civilians or animals were harmed in the incident.
The Pennsylvania State Police Troop L Fire Marshal Unit is investigating the cause of the fire, which originated in the western half of the barn. Due to the extensive damage, the cause is currently listed as undetermined. Authorities confirmed that no criminal activity is suspected.
The damage from the fire is estimated to be approximately $150,000.
