The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is in need for foster families as the shelter already is seeing the effects of kitten season straining capacity at the shelter.
Kitten season typically peaks during the spring and summer months, inundating shelters with litters of kittens in need of care and nurturing. The ARL is experiencing a particularly high volume of kittens arriving at its doors with a total to date of 368 kittens in different stages of care.
“We are already seeing a high number of kittens arriving every day at the shelter,” said Amara Cordero, Shelter Director at the ARL. “Our staff and volunteer fosters are working tirelessly to provide care for these kittens, but we simply need more support. Foster homes are urgently needed to provide temporary care and love until these kittens are ready for surgery and adoption.”
Fostering a kitten can be a rewarding experience for individuals and families alike. By opening their homes to these vulnerable animals, foster families play a crucial role in helping them thrive and grow until they are old enough to be adopted into permanent loving homes.
“We are calling on our community to rally together and support us during this challenging time,” added Cordero. “Whether you have experience fostering animals or are new to the process, we welcome anyone who is willing to open their hearts and homes to these kittens in need.”
Foster families receive all necessary supplies, including food, litter, and medical care for the kittens in their care, along with guidance and support from the shelter’s Foster Department. The commitment can vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the needs of the kittens and the fosters time availability.

During the 2023 season, the ARL received a total of 2,834 kittens.
