Update – 10/21/2025 at 12:25 AM: Cumru Township Police say James Rice was taken into custody by the Maryland State Police without incident at approximately 12:05 AM on 10/21/25. Cumru Township Detectives obtained information for James Rice’s phone, which provided Rice’s location in Maryland. The Maryland State Police were contacted and provided information for the location of James Rice. Maryland State Police then proceeded to Rice’s location at a rest stop and took Rice into custody without incident. Rice will be extradited to Pennsylvania on the warrant relative to Attempted Homicide and related charges.
Original post: Cumru Township Police are investigating what they are describing as a violent domestic situation that left a 61-year-old man hospitalized Monday afternoon.
According to police, the incident occurred around 4:40 p.m. in the 1700 block of Acorn Drive. When officers arrived minutes later, they found the victim alert and conscious, suffering from multiple stab wounds.
The victim told officers he had been stabbed by his nephew, identified as 40-year-old James Rice. Investigators initially said they were not aware of any prior issues between the two and described the incident as sudden and unexpected.

Police said Rice fled the scene in a 2004 dark blue Volvo XC70 station wagon bearing Pennsylvania registration LRD6371.
The victim was transported to Reading Hospital – Tower Health for treatment of his injuries. His current condition has not been released.
