Douglas Carter Beane returns to Reading as Genesius Theatre’s Artistic Director

Genesius Theatre has announced that acclaimed playwright, screenwriter, and director Douglas Carter Beane will serve as Artistic Director for the coming year, marking a homecoming for the five-time Tony Award nominee who began his creative journey on the Genesius stage.

Beane, a Reading native, is widely recognized for his contributions to contemporary American theatre, with works including The Little Dog Laughed and The Nance, along with the books for the hit musicals Xanadu and Sister Act. His early experiences at Genesius inspired his play Shows for Days, which premiered at Lincoln Center Theater starring Patti LuPone and Michael Urie.

While returning to Reading to scout locations for his upcoming film directorial debut Magic Time, Beane revisited Genesius Theatre. Upon learning of the organization’s leadership vacancy and financial challenges, he offered to step in and help guide the theatre forward.

“At the end of the day, I’m a theater geek — and I feel a responsibility to the place that gave me my start,” Beane said. “I want to make theatre happen: new plays, new musicals, and rediscover forgotten works — to give them future lives.”

As Artistic Director, Beane will oversee efforts to revitalize the theatre, including mentoring young performers, engaging the community, and advancing new artistic projects. His appointment coincides with a major fundraising and restoration initiative aimed at strengthening the theatre’s financial foundation, upgrading its facilities, and ensuring its longevity.

“Doug’s return represents both a homecoming and a rebirth,” said Stefanie Deiter-Printz, Vice President of the Genesius Theatre Board of Directors. “His vision, combined with our renewed commitment to education and community, will help set the stage for the next 50 years of Genesius Theatre.”

Founded in 1971, Genesius Theatre has long been a cornerstone of the Reading arts community, producing musicals, dramas, and children’s theatre while serving as a training ground for performers who have gone on to careers in the entertainment industry.

The public will have an opportunity to meet Beane and hear his vision for the theatre’s future during an open meeting on Monday, October 13 at 7 p.m. at Genesius Theatre, 153 N. 10th St., Reading.
