1st Street Players continues season with charming production of The Wizard of Oz

After a tornado transports Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto into a magical and mysterious land of munchkins, witches, flying monkeys, and enchanted trees, she must follow the yellow brick road to find the Wizard and her way back home. Along the way, she meets a group of unlikely friends – a Scarecrow, a Tin Man, and a Lion.

Based on L. Frank Baum’s beloved novel and the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz” is a delightful story about the power of friendship and resilience!

“We are excited to bring this production to the community,” says Artistic Director Andrea Hart. “It’s a story that everyone knows and everyone loves, but the talented cast and crew are putting their own special spin on it!”

Hart is also excited about hosting the theater’s first-ever sensory-friendly/relaxed performance on Thursday, January 20, at 7pm. “Theater is supposed to be for everyone, but people with sensory issues sometimes have a hard time with the bright lights, the fancy effects, and the loud sounds that come with traditional musicals.”

1st Street’s sensory performance will feature lower light and sound levels and fewer effects. Patrons will have the ability to move and talk during the performances. Other adjustments will be made to make the space more inclusive and welcoming. “In the future, we hope to offer a number of sensory-friendly performances.”

The show is directed by Grace Patton with musical direction by Nate Patton. Gretchen Jameson-Wilcox (Stage Manager), Megan Dietrich (Choreographer & Sound Designer), Charles Troxel (Lighting Designer), and Rick Dietrich (Sound Engineer) round out the creative team.

1st Street Players production of The Wizard of Oz opens January 13, with performances on January 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 and 23. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students and children.
