3rd annual Berks Street Art Festival features colorful chalk art pieces

The Berks Street Art Festival gave hundreds of people space to be creative Saturday at the Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center. Presented by local nonprofit The Camel Project, the 3rd annual event featured interactive activities, music and food.

This year’s theme was “Kindness & Creativity.” Festival-goers of all ages were encouraged to show off their chalk art talent by drawing on the paved areas at the event.

“We need a day for youth and adults to balance their emotions and mental wellness with art and hands-on experiences,” said Pamela Gockley, Executive Director of The Camel Project. “The past few years have been challenging in many ways, and so we hope this festival provides an opportunity for people of all backgrounds and ages to connect and have fun through the arts.”

New this year was the “Chalk the Truck Fun,” where Festival-goers were invited to express themselves by drawing on a specially prepared truck. Again this year, a special “Transportation Art” exhibit showcased classic and rare automobiles.

Featured performances included musician Dave Kline, Pretzel City Chorus, Genesius Theater, magician Jose Joel Delgado, and the Muhlenberg HS ROTC Drill Team. Strolling performers included Hip Hop Dancing by Richie and Autumn, Reading Police K-9, and Disney Cosplayers Care.

More than 50 vendors participated in the event, which included activities, interactive art demonstrations and Community Song and musical instruments with Rob and Calvin.

The Camel Project’s mission is to eliminate bullying in all its forms and assist communities, including schools, organizations, and individuals, in changing the culture of violent and unacceptable behaviors resulting in trauma and abuse.
