The 98th Annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony is set to take place in Shillington on Monday, May 25, continuing a local tradition that dates back nearly a century.
Organized by the American Legion Reber-Moore Post 635, the annual event will honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.
According to organizers, the parade will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. at Shillington Park and proceed through the borough before concluding at the Shillington Town Hall, where a brief memorial service will be held.
Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday in May, became an official federal holiday in 1971, though its origins date back to the years following the Civil War. Since 1927, the American Legion post has hosted the annual parade and ceremony in Shillington as a way to remember fallen service members.
Individuals and community groups are encouraged to participate in the parade procession. Organizers said registration information is available online, and additional event information can be obtained by contacting the organizers directly.
