Genesius Theatre is set to close its 2024 season with a heartwarming, family-friendly musical adaptation of the beloved 1988 film Big, starring Tom Hanks. This feel-good production, complete with catchy songs, vibrant choreography, and poignant performances, promises to delight audiences of all ages during its December run.
Based on the classic movie, the musical follows the whimsical and emotional journey of 12-year-old Josh Baskin, who makes a wish on a mysterious Zoltar Machine to become “big” after struggling to fit in. When Josh wakes up in the body of a 30-year-old man, hilarity and heartfelt moments ensue as he navigates the adult world with a childlike wonder, discovering the challenges of growing up and the joy of rediscovering one’s inner kid.
This adaptation, which originally opened on Broadway in 1996, adds depth to the movie’s characters and features music by David Shire, lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr., and a book by John Weidman. Local actor Kevin Adams stars as the adult Josh Baskin. For Adams, stepping into this iconic role is “surreal.”
“Big was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, and it’s surreal to be a part of it on the stage,” Adams shared. “Having grown up watching the incomparable Tom Hanks in so many memorable roles, it seems like his voice and cadence have always been rattling around in my brain. I know I deliver certain lines the way I remember them from the film, but I feel like I am also adding my own twist to Josh.”
Adams, a high school teacher and father, reflected on the dual challenges and joys of portraying a pre-teen: “The most challenging part of portraying a 12-year-old is not constantly saying ‘bruh’ and ‘what the sigma’ like my students and my own children. The most fun part of portraying a 12-year-old is remembering what it was like to be as silly and carefree as I wanted to be.”
Rachel Himes-Dewalt plays Susan Lawrence, a driven businesswoman who finds her playful side through Josh’s influence. “Josh helps her reconnect with her playful, vulnerable side,” said Himes-Dewalt. “I’m excited for audiences to see how much heart this story has. It’s a great reminder to keep that spark of joy and curiosity alive, no matter how old we are.”
Director Bill Eschbach promises an uplifting and memorable experience for Berks County audiences. “Audiences will love the catchy, upbeat musical numbers and be impressed by the energetic choreography,” he said. “Parents will be touched by the plight of Mrs. Baskin dealing with the loss of her child. It really is a show for everyone to enjoy and be moved by. It is a great, feel-good holiday show for the whole family.”
The production runs from December 13–22 with evening and matinee performances. Tickets range from $18–$37.50, with the show lasting approximately two and a half hours, including intermission. Genesius Theatre is located at 153 N. 10th St., Reading, PA, and offers free parking and accessibility accommodations.
