The Antietam Valley Community Partnership (AVCP) has announced a Community Creek Cleanup Day for Saturday, October 18, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carsonia Avenue and Antietam Roads bridge in Reading (Pennside).
Volunteers will work downstream toward the Stony Creek Athletic Association, clearing weeds, brush, debris, and downed trees. The goal, organizers said, is to beautify the area, reduce flood risks, and restore the natural health of the creek.
“This is more than just a cleanup — it’s a chance for neighbors to come together and make a lasting difference in our community,” said Larry O’Boyle, president of the Antietam Valley Community Partnership.
The cleanup is open to community members ages 16 and older. Volunteers are welcome to help for any amount of time, whether an hour, half a day, or the full day. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and lunch and refreshments will be provided. Students can also earn community service hours. A waiver is required at sign-in.
The event is a collaborative effort supported by AVCP, Lower Alsace Township, Mt. Penn Borough, Exeter Township, St. Lawrence Borough, Mt. Penn Fire Department, Lower Alsace Fire Department, Antietam School District, State Sen. Judy Schwank, and State Rep. Jacklyn Rusnock.
Pre-registration is encouraged to help plan for supplies and meals. More information is available at antietamvalley.org/events/creek-cleanup.
