Blue Marsh Lake swim beach to reopen, but harmful algae warning remains in effect

The swim beach at Blue Marsh Lake will reopen on Saturday, July 19, but officials are warning that the risk from harmful algae remains present throughout much of the lake.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Philadelphia District announced Friday that although test results from the designated swimming area at the Dry Brooks Day Use Area show cyanotoxin levels have dropped within safe limits, a Warning Status for Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) remains in effect.

The decision to reopen the swim beach was based on weekly water quality testing specific to the Dry Brooks Day Use Area. However, the Corps cautions that conditions can change rapidly and that water in other areas of the lake continues to show high levels of cyanobacteria — commonly known as blue-green algae — along with the harmful toxins they can produce.

“The update to the swim beach status does not eliminate the risks associated with harmful algae,” the Corps stated. “Visitors are advised to be alert for harmful algal bloom conditions and avoid contact with the water.”

Cyanobacteria blooms can appear as discolored water, surface foam, scum, or mats. The toxins they release can pose serious health risks to humans and animals, especially children and pets. Officials urge the public to avoid swimming or allowing pets to play in or drink from water that appears affected.

Anyone who comes into contact with suspect water is advised to rinse off with clean water as soon as possible.
