First Unitarian Universalist Church of Berks County celebrates solar energy milestone

On October 6th, the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Berks County (FUUBC) marked a historic milestone with the dedication of its newly installed solar photovoltaic system, making it the first church in Reading, PA to adopt solar energy. The event, attended by local community members and dignitaries, highlighted the church’s commitment to environmental sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

State Senator Judy Schwank delivered the keynote speech, emphasizing the importance of renewable energy in combatting climate change and creating a positive impact on the local community. In her address, she praised the church’s leadership, noting that FUUBC’s investment in solar energy sets a strong example for others in the community.

Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed a light reception and participated in guided tours of the new solar system, providing an up-close look at how the technology will generate clean energy for the church. The system is expected to significantly reduce energy costs for the church, while contributing to a greener future for the community.

The installation of the solar panels is seen as a major step forward in FUUBC’s longstanding commitment to social justice and sustainability. Founded in 1831, the church has been a beacon of progressive values, promoting spiritual growth, diversity, and environmental stewardship.
