The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has awarded $150,000 to a Berks County company as part of a statewide effort to expand alternative fuel transportation projects and reduce reliance on gasoline and diesel fuel.
According to the agency, Romark Logistics of PA, Inc. will use the funding to purchase two electric vehicle terminal tractors for operations in Berks County through the state’s Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant (AFIG) program.
The grant was one of eight projects selected statewide, totaling nearly $1.44 million in funding. DEP said the projects will support the deployment of 25 alternative fuel vehicles and four new fueling stations across seven counties in Pennsylvania.
In a statement, DEP Secretary Jessica Shirley said the projects are intended to help businesses lower fuel costs while also reducing emissions.
“With fuel prices well over $4 for gasoline and nearly $6 for diesel, Pennsylvania businesses and local governments need every option available to save on gas,” Shirley said. “These grants will help reduce costs for these companies with alternative fuel solutions that will help save them money and also reduce air pollution.”
DEP said the funded projects include electric vehicles, compressed natural gas waste trucks, renewable natural gas projects, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Five of the selected projects are located in or serve Environmental Justice areas.
State officials said transportation accounts for up to 22 percent of Pennsylvania’s greenhouse gas emissions, while gasoline and diesel vehicles contribute nearly half of the state’s nitrogen oxide emissions. DEP estimates the awarded projects will collectively save approximately 774,000 gallons of gasoline annually.
The AFIG program provides grants for projects that replace older gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles with cleaner alternatives, including electric and natural gas vehicles, as well as projects that expand fueling and charging infrastructure.
Other funded projects this round included electric vehicle charging infrastructure in Allegheny and Beaver counties, compressed natural gas waste vehicles in Butler County, and additional electric vehicle truck projects in Luzerne, Schuylkill, and York counties.
DEP said the AFIG program is currently accepting applications for the next funding round through Oct. 7, 2026.
