Gas leak prompts overnight evacuations in Exeter Township

A reported gas leak late Saturday night led to temporary evacuations in a residential area of Exeter Township, according to township police.

Just before midnight on Saturday, Jan. 31, officers with the Exeter Township Police Department responded to the 1300 block of Claire Drive after receiving a report of a possible gas leak. Police coordinated with UGI Utilities, which confirmed an active gas leak in the area.

As a precaution, police, along with members of the Exeter Township Volunteer Fire Department, conducted door-to-door notifications and evacuated residents from homes along Claire Drive and Budd Street.

Township emergency management coordinators established a temporary shelter for displaced residents at the Dunn Center in Exeter Township while UGI crews worked to address the leak and secure the area.

Shortly after 3 a.m., UGI determined the area was safe. Power was restored, and residents were permitted to return to their homes.
