Tower Health hosts Match Day for Drexel students in Berks County

As the clock ticked toward noon, excitement and anticipation filled the room at Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) at Tower Health.

Berks County native Alexis Price-Moyer tore open her white envelope on Match Day and discovered she would begin her general surgery residency at Temple University Medical Center. This marks the second year that the College of Medicine at Tower Health celebrated Match Day and medical students have found their “match” at hospitals across the region and beyond.

“I’ve enjoyed my time at the Tower Health campus. It’s home and we created a family,” Price-Moyer said. “But I’m ready to hit the ground running and show Temple what I’m capable of.”

Price-Moyer dreamed of becoming a doctor since the age of 9, inspired by the loss of her father to cancer. A United States Air Force veteran, she completed her entire educational journey – from preschool through college – within Berks County, graduating from Penn State Berks and Wilson High School. She was part of the inaugural West Reading campus class. She later completed a year of research through the prestigious Medical Research Scholars Program at the National Institutes of Health before returning to medical school, where she served as class president each year.

Match Day is an annual rite of passage for fourth-year medical students across the country, when they learn where they will complete their residency programs, which can last three to seven years. This year, 290 Drexel College of Medicine students participated in Match Day at the Philadelphia and West Reading campuses.

Under the leadership of Wei Du, MD, and his team, Tower Health received nearly 20,400 applications and successfully filled all 110 resident and fellow match positions. Eight DUCOM students were matched with Tower Health and will join the system’s high-quality care teams in emergency medicine, OB/GYN, and psychiatry.

During Match Day, friends and family gathered for the countdown and big moment. Dr. Charles F. Barbera, Reading Hospital President and CEO and a Temple University School of Medicine graduate, was among those cheering when the students revealed their matches.

“Attending Match Day is a privilege,” he said. “I’m so proud of Alexis for matching at Temple. “She represents what is truly special about our community, and I can’t wait to see what her future holds.”

Tower Health and the College of Medicine continue to strengthen their partnership. Since 2023, 31 Drexel medical students have joined residency programs at Tower Health, helping expand patient care and build the local medical workforce.

“These individuals represent the future of medicine here at home and around the nation,” said Michael Stern, Tower Health president and CEO.

For Price-Moyer, the day marked the culmination of years of dedication and hard work, as well as the beginning of the next chapter in her journey to make a difference in patients’ lives.
