On October 14, 2025, the Junior League of Reading hosted an impactful panel discussion titled “Nurturing Equity” at the Exeter Community Library. The event featured esteemed speakers Dr. Olubunmi Ojikutu, MD, Dr. Jillian S. Krause, MD, and State Representative Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, who shared insights on pressing topics of menstrual equity, nutrition and food insecurity.
The panel provided a platform for in-depth discussions about the challenges at the intersection of period poverty and food insecurity, touching on legislation currently being introduced to address these critical issues and highlighting how these twin struggles are directly impacting women and families right here in Berks County. Attendees gained a deep understanding of systemic barriers and practical steps for community action. Participants were also given the opportunity to ask questions, fostering a collaborative environment for learning and advocacy. The goal of the panel was for participants to leave with knowledge and encourage dialogue around these essential topics.
The Junior League’s Advocacy Committee organized this event in an effort to support the organization’s commitment to advancing women’s leadership and improving community welfare. In conjunction with the panel, attendees participated in a food drive to benefit New Journey Community Outreach in order to provide immediate, tangible relief.
