Mayor Moran Promotes Police Chief Tornielli and Deputy Chief Ruiz

City of Reading Mayor Eddie Moran announced today that he is permanently promoting both Police Chief Richard Tornielli and Deputy Chief Javier Ruiz.

“Tornielli has proven that he is the right person for the job. Through his leadership, we have seen an increase of morale in the Police Department” said Mayor Moran.

“More importantly, I have seen and been impressed by the Chief’s ability to handle pressure. I am confident he will take the department to new heights especially during these unprecedented times.”

Mayor Moran also commended Deputy Chief Ruiz saying, “Ruiz has been an asset to the Reading Police Department and our community for the last two decades. His vast network of contacts and deep roots in the City makes him invaluable as we continue to strengthen police-neighborhood collaborations.”

Mayor Moran finally added, “We are fortunate to have both of these long-standing law enforcement officers. Tornielli and Ruiz are vested in our great City of Reading through their relationships and partnerships. They have my full faith and confidence as I know they will lead with dedication, integrity and professionalism. These values are fundamental to building a better Reading together.”

Police Chief Tornielli thanked the Mayor saying, “I am thankful that Mayor Eddie Moran has placed his confidence in my abilities and qualifications to head the City of Reading Police Department as the Chief of Police. I am honored to lead this excellent agency and work with all of the exceptionally professional men and women of the department.”

Chief Tornielli spoke openly about building coalitions across the community stating, “I am looking forward to working with the Mayor, the Administration, City Council, members of the community and other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Our goal is to create a comprehensive strategy to ensure the safety and well-being of our neighborhoods.”

Finally, Tornielli added, “I look forward to working with Deputy Chief Javier Ruiz and all of our personnel, I am confident that the Reading Police Department can and will achieve Mayor Moran’s goal of improving public safety and building a better Reading together.”

The longest tenured officer within the Reading Police Department, Javier Ruiz, was grateful for the opportunity to serve noting, “I want to thank Mayor Moran, Managing Director Pedro Cortes, and Chief Richard Tornielli for giving me the opportunity to assist in guiding the Reading Police Department in a strong affirmative direction.”

Lastly, Deputy Chief Ruiz emphasized, “Our great City will continue to improve its quality of
life for all of its residents and police officers as we collectively pursue increased understanding, respect and appreciation for one another.”
