The City of Reading has been awarded a $250,000 state grant to begin planning the redevelopment of the former Dana Corporation property, a 50-acre site that has sat vacant for decades.
The funding comes through Governor Josh Shapiro’s PA SITES (Strategic Investments to Enhance Sites) program, which helps prepare former industrial and vacant properties across Pennsylvania for new business investment.
The grant will allow the city to complete a detailed redevelopment plan for the Dana site, including environmental assessments, infrastructure evaluations, and utility capacity studies. Officials say the work is a critical step in turning the brownfield into a location ready for future private development and job creation.
“This award represents a tremendous opportunity for Reading’s future,” said Mayor Eddie Morán. “For decades, the Dana site has stood as a reminder of our city’s industrial past. Now, with this investment from the Commonwealth, we have the chance to turn that chapter into one of growth, innovation, and new employment for our residents. We are grateful to Governor Shapiro and DCED for believing in Reading’s potential.”
Reading’s project was one of 11 selected statewide in the latest round of PA SITES funding, which totaled more than $39 million. Locally, the $250,000 award will allow the city to move forward with the planning work needed to attract private investment to the site.
City officials said they will work with state partners, community groups, and local organizations to ensure the site’s future redevelopment supports Reading’s long-term economic goals.
