Food Employee changing tasks with possible contaminated hands without handwashing: Restaurant Inspections, July 10, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On July 1, 2025, Vintner’s Table, located at 945 Hill Ave Ste 100, Wyomissing, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration at the glasswashers.

On July 1, 2025, Stouch Tavern, located at 138 W High St, Womelsdorf, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required.

On July 1, 2025, Schaylor Brewing Company, located at 2390 Lancaster Ave, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food Employee is not using available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine sanitizer concentration. Observed deeply two scored cutting boards on the Bain Marie’s not resurfaced or discarded as required. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. Corrected. Floor in the kitchen area, is made of concrete, and is not durable, smooth, non-porous, non-absorbent.

On July 1, 2025, Josh’s Pizza Zone, located at 51 E 2nd St, Boyertown, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Commercially processed refrigerated, ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food, located in the Bain Maries, and held more than 24 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Light is not shielded or shatter proof over the prep, dishwashing, and the pizza oven area. Exhaust vents located throughout the facility are dirty and can potentially contaminate food and equipment. Observed a large amount of grease build-up on the walls, floors, the fryer, grill, and the ventilation hood of the cookline area.

On July 1, 2025, Giavanna’s Pizzeria, located at 1500 New Holland Rd E3, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Multiple foods were held at 51°F, in the Bain Marie area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Observed multiple foods held at 44°F in the walk-in cooler. Observed deeply scored on the Bain Maire cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Observed the nonfood contact surfaces of the large mixer in the back prep area to have a buildup of old food residue. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Corrected. Plumbing system not maintained in good repair – observed the cold water handle leaking at the 3-bay sink. Corrected. Floor in the back prep area is cracked / roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Back door located in the back area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.

On July 1, 2025, Domino’s Pizza 58203100, located at 310 Penn St, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Leaky 3 basin sink faucet.

On July 1, 2025, Crazy Bubble Ice Cream LLC, located at 340 N 9th, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: An open employee’s beverage container was observed behind the service counter, a food preparation area. Commercial Food in the cooler area stored open with no covering. Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the cooler, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Toilet paper roll was empty upon inspection.

On July 1, 2025, Charlotte Street Coffee Company, located at 30 N Philadelphia Ave, Boyertown, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food Employee observed changing tasks that may have contaminated hands without a proper handwash in-between. Food employees observed in the prep/counter area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, or hats.

On July 1, 2025, Aaron’s Tacos Minimarket Inc, located at 242 N 9th St, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the deli, is not being date marked.

On July 2, 2025, Shelbourne Program Bingo, located at 5474 Perkiomen Ave, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view.

On July 2, 2025, Santa Barbara 363194, located at 850 Franklin St, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food in walk in refrigerated not dated and possible cross contamination with improper storing of food. Prepped Food in the walk in refrigerator area stored open with no covering. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the refrigerator, is not being date marked.

On July 2, 2025, Jimmies C-Town Market A3802640, located at 264 S 9th St, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed commercial food stored directly on the floor in walk in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the deli, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Toilet in men’s room needs to be fasten to the floor. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the meat department area. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the meat department area. Mops are not being hung to air dry. Mop left in dirty mop water.

On July 2, 2025, Comalli Taqueria, located at 701 Court St, West Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Scoop at the ice machine is being stored directly on top of the machine, which is not a clean surface. Corrected. Scoops being stored in the ice bin at the bar with handles touching the drink ice. Corrected. Chlorine chemical sanitizer residual detected in the final sanitizer rinse cycle of the low temperature sanitizing dishwasher was 0 ppm, and not 50-100 ppm as required. Facility will sanitize all dishes in the 3-compartment sink until the dishwasher is operating properly. Owner notified the service company during this inspection. The soda gun at the bar, a food contact surface, was observed to have residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Garage-style door to the outside, located in the storage area of the food facility is open without any screening. Working containers (spray bottles) in bar and server areas, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On July 5, 2025, Laurel Run Swim Association, located at 3500 Willow Grove Ave, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food employees observed in kitchen not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers. Food dispensing utensil observed stored in the ice and not with handle above the top of the food. Manager holds a Food Handler certification instead of a Food Manager certification as required. Screen torn at outside door potentially allowing pests into kitchen area. Wall between hot dog roller and air conditioner has paint breakdown that may contaminate food. Food employee personal belongings observed in food prep areas. Corrected on inspection.

On July 7, 2025, Willow Glenn Park – Konopelski Katering, located at 94 Park Ave, Sinking Spring, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Entrance door to the outside was observed being propped open. Corrected.

On July 7, 2025, Rutter’s #69, located at 100 Grand St, Hamburg, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Four gallons of 1% milk were observed in the retail cooler for sale with an expiration date of 7/2/25. Milks were pulled from the salesfloor. Corrected. Icee nozzles, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and black organic matter and were not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Non-food contact surface of the spray nozzle in the dish area is not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Vents and ceiling around the vents are observed with excessive dust build up and in need of cleaning.

On July 7, 2025, Pappy T’s Pub & Lounge, located at 50 Industrial Dr, Hamburg, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Assorted food items were held at 46 °F, in the cookline area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Equipment is not working. Restaurant just opened I asked them to move the items to the walk-in cooler and have the unit repaired. Do not store food in this unit as it does not work and cannot maintain temperature with ice only in a hot kitchen. Kick plate of the ice machine was observed with pink and black organic matter and in need of cleaning. Food facility has an employee that has taken food safety training program; however, the food safety program was not an ANSI/CFP accredited Certified Food Manager program.

On July 7, 2025, New Hamburg Diner, located at 212 State St, Hamburg, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food facility does not have available quaternary or chlorine sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Floor in dish/prep kitchen area is made of wood with tile on top and tile is missing making it roughened / and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Replace tiles. No paper towel or paper towel dispenser at handwash sink in the dish/prep area.

On July 7, 2025, Kwik Shoppe, located at 555 Shoemaker Ave, Shoemakersville, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed cases of food stored directly on the floor in dry storage area and the walk-in cooler area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Cooked hamburgers were held at 90°F, in the cookline area, rather than 135°F or above as required. PIC is reheating burgers to 165 and will hold above 135. Corrected. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Interior kick plate of the ice machine was observed with pink and black organic matter and was not clean to sight and touch. The floor / wall juncture in storage area to the left of the ice machine in that whole alcove the area is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch. 2 Lights are not shielded or shatter proof over the backroom/ dry storage area. Wall in the storage area to the left of the ice machine and behind the grill-corner into backroom area, has a hole, or is broken and in need of repair.

On July 7, 2025, Arby’s #7714, located at 809 S Fourth St Ste 2, Hamburg, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the drive thru/front counter area. Corrected.

On July 8, 2025, Mertztown Great Valu Market, located at 953 State St, Mertztown, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Observed a large build-up of ice in the walk-in-freezer that has covered food items, making it unsafe for public consumption. Raw chicken in the walk-in-cooler area between the bakery and deli is stored open with no covering. Food ingredient storage containers, in the bakery area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Observed cardboard being used underneath the pressure cooker to collect spilled grease. Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required throughout the deli, bakery, meat, and produce areas. Observed the walls, floor, stove, and pressure cooker had a large build-up of grease, and needs to be cleaned. Observed a large amount of ice build-up of ice in the walk-in-freezer, indicating a potential issue with the seals around the walk-in-freezer door not working proprly. Ceiling tiles missing in the prep areas, and need to be replaced.

On July 8, 2025, Funny Farm Apiaries, located at 17 Oak Rd, Mertztown, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Food Facility Person in Charge not able to provide documentation that the frozen chicken products were processed at an approved facility as the packages did not have any labeling. The person-in-charge removed the chicken from the facility.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: West Reading Pool Snack Bar, Pizza Hut #37146 in Shillington, Twin Valley Recreation in Morgantown, Rita’s Water ice #069 in Sinking Spring, Pip and Lily’s Loaded Tots in Birdsboro, Floyd’s Steak in Reinholds, E-Z Shoppe in Shillington, Betty’s Old Fashion Lemonade in Birdsboro, (Eastern PA Homestead Festival Kutztown: Quick and easy Mixes, Pretzel Revolution, Daus Wurst Haus), Don Chef Restaurant in Reading, Wegman’s Poultry in Muhlenberg Township, Lorah Family Meats in Reading, Hoober’s Produce in Reading, Johnny’s Pizza in Birdsboro.
