Standing dirty water in bottom of chest-style cooler at bar: Restaurant Inspections, July 24, 2025

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On July 17, 2025, Sonic Drive-In #6882, located at 850 Crossings Boulevard, Elverson, was inspected and found with the following violation: Chili, which was cooled, was only reheated to 126°F for hot holding and not 165°F for 15 seconds as required. Observed the gasket on the freezer door not working properly as evidenced by the build-up of ice near the interior fan. Observed a large build-up grease in vent hoods, walls, and floors of grill and fryer area.

On July 17, 2025, Schmeck’s Villa, located at 4581 Boyertown Pike, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Observed in-use knives and /or cleavers stored between table edges, an area not easily cleaned & sanitized. Corrected. An open employee’s beverage container was observed in the salad preparation area. Corrected. Observed several food/drink items stored directly on the floor in the walk-in cooler and at the bar, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Corrected. A working container (spray bottle) of cleaner was stored on the same shelf with food in the kitchen area. Corrected. Observed an accumulation of grease, old food debris, and dirt on the floor under equipment at the cooking line and under the shelves in the walk-in cooler. There is standing, dirty water in the bottom of the chest-style cooler at the bar.

On July 17, 2025, Philly Pretzel Factory (in Walmart #1777), located at 5900 Perkiomen Ave, Reading, PA, was inspected and found with the following violations: Caulking along the edge of the mop sink is deteriorating, leaving a gap between the sink and the wall.

On July 17, 2025, Dunkin’ Donuts #346432, located at 955 Benjamin Franklin Highway, Suite 1, Douglassville, PA, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility is reusing a plastic drink cup as sugar scoop, which is intended to be a single-service or single-use article. Corrected. Multiple foods were held at 51°F, in the Bain Marie sandwich prep area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the back area. Corrected.

On July 17, 2025, Country Roads Cafe at The Produce Auction, located at 209 Oak Haven Road, Fleetwood, PA, was inspected and found with the following violation: Outside window, in the dish area, is open, unscreened, and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals.

On July 17, 2025, Camp Calvary, located at 48 New Schaefferstown Road, Bernville, PA, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility does not employ a certified food employee as required.

On July 17, 2025, ALDI #79, located at 1010 Cedar Top Road, Reading, PA 19607, was inspected and found with the following violation: Severely dented canned items observed in canned food aisle are and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Observed a buildup of old food residue on in the grate area of the raw meat, deli meat/cheese and produce cold hold units.

On July 17, 2025, Abraxas Academy, located at 1000 Academy Drive, Morgantown, PA 19543, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed a large build-up of grease on the wall, floor, and the fryer in the cookline area. Observed multiple food items being stored directly on the floor in storage room, walk-in-cooler, and the walk-in-freezer, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.

On July 18, 2025, Friendly Stops 2 Sunoco, located at 159 Penn Avenue, Robesonia, PA 19551, was inspected and found with the following violation: Hood vent filters above the fryers were observed with excessive grease and dust build up. Corrected.

On July 21, 2025, Juliana’s, located at 776 Fritztown Road, Sinking Spring, PA 19608, was inspected and found with the following violation: Drinking water quality obtained from a non-public water system does not meet DEP water quality standards. Boil water advisory was given to restaurant owners son by DEP at todays inspection.

On July 22, 2025, Fiore Ristorante, located at 401 Main Street, Shoemakersville, PA 19555, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired 9/25/2024 and is no longer valid. Observed a cup being stored in bulk bins of salt and sugar. Cups should not be left in bulk containers as they have no handle to prevent potential contamination of food. Only utensils with handles store out of products should be used. Corrected. Scoop being stored in the ice machine with handle touching and/or buried beneath the ice. Corrected.

On July 22, 2025, Birdsboro Beverage, located at 236 W 1st Street, Birdsboro, PA 19508, was inspected and found with the following violation: Garage-style door located in the front of the food facility has a gap at the bottom and does not protect against the entry of pests.

On July 23, 2025, Sandstone Acres, located at 67 Bowmansville Road, Mohnton, PA 19540, was inspected and found with the following violation: Prepackaged foods are not labeled properly with the name of product, ingredient statement, net weight, distributed by statement and/or nutritional facts. Hot salsa, spaghetti sauce, and barbecued onions are missing sub-ingredients. Items pulled from sale. Corrected.

On July 23, 2025, Domino’s #4753, located at 2844 Penn Avenue, Reading, PA 19609, was inspected and found with the following violation: Mops are not being hung to air dry. Corrected. Coving tile in the prep area was observed broken and roughened and is not a smooth, easily cleanable surface. Plastic insert pans observed in clean dish storage area with sticker residue on exterior of pan but when stacked the sticker is touching the food contact surface. Remove sticker and sticker residue before wash, rinse, and sanitize to avoid build-up.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Pinto Thai in Birdsboro, Mark Martin Meats in Kutztown, Lafaver Family Farm Store in Wyomissing, Firefly Forest Bakehouse in Birdsboro, Eagles Peak CG Snack Bar in Robesonia, Domino’s #4847 in Robesonia, BF Clams in Mertztown, Wawa #274 in Muhlenberg Township, Winding Road BBQ in Fleetwood, Genn Valley CC Pool Snack Bar in Sinking Spring, Floyd’s Steaks in Reinholds, Wild Brew and Blend in Fleetwood, White Magnolia Coffee Trailer in Myerstown, Fleetwood Community Pool Snack Bar in Fleetwood, Ferrara’s Trattoria in Reading, Wilshire Swim Team Snack Bar, Sonic Drive-In #6886 in Exeter Township, Lincoln Park Swim Association in West Lawn, Laxmi’s Indian Grille in Wyomissing, Gino’s Cafe in Shillington, Friendship Fire Company #1 in Geigertown, Anita’s Gourmet Biscotti in Sinking Spring.
