The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. On September 11, 2025, Opportunity House, located at 430 North 2nd Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: The handwash sink located in the classroom area does not have water at a temperature of at least 100°F.

On September 12, 2025, Subway, located at 5370 Allentown Pike, Temple, was inspected and found with the following violation: ServSafe certificates not displayed.

On September 12, 2025, Santa Rita Grocery Store, located at 1053 Cotton Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the deli, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. The maintenance of the hand wash sink was not operable. Expired milk in the cooler. Hot food was held at 86 °F, in the hot hold area, rather than 135°F or above as required. Thermometers for ensuring proper temperatures of food are not available or readily accessible. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the prep area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the prep area. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the prep area.

On September 12, 2025, Rosie’s Kitchen, located at 100 Gun Club Road, Mohnton, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed deeply scored cutting boards not resurfaced or discarded as required. Potato slicer, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch.

On September 12, 2025, Old San Juan 2, located at 1651 Fairview Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the prep area to remind food employees to wash their hands.

On September 12, 2025, Leyenda 2, located at 600 Tulpehocken Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Facility was listed as out of compliance. Temperature measuring devices for ensuring proper temperatures in refrigerated / hot holding equipment, in refrigerator area, is not located to measure the warmest part of the equipment. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the refrigerator, is not being date marked.

On September 12, 2025, J C Grocery, located at 750 Chestnut Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violations: No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the counter area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the counter area. Commercial Food in the deli area stored open with no covering. Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the deli, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened. Ice cream freezer needs to be cleaned, also the deli cooler needs to be cleaned.

On September 12, 2025, Apex Rock Hard Cafe at LA Fitness, located at 1183 Berkshire Boulevard, Wyomissing, was inspected and found with the following violation: A working container (spray bottle) of cleaner was stored on the same shelf with food items in the front service area. Corrected. Food dispensing utensils in the front service area observed stored in the foods and not with handle above the top of the food. The handwash sink in the front service area does not have single use towels. Corrected.

On September 14, 2025, AMC, located at 3050 North 5th Street Highway, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Food employee observed in food area, not wearing proper hair restraints, such as nets, hats, or beard covers.

On September 15, 2025, Twin Valley High School, located at 4851 North Twin Valley Road, Elverson, was inspected and found with the following violation: The Person in Charge did not demonstrate adequate knowledge of food safety in this food facility as evidenced by this non-compliant inspection. Food ingredient storage containers, in the walk-in cooler area, is not labeled with the common name of the food. Corrected. Refrigerated ready to eat, time/temperature control for safety food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 24 hours, located in multiple refrigerators, is not being date marked. Refrigerated ready-to-eat time/temperature control for safety food repackaged by the food facility, was being datemarked with a sell by, use by or discard by date that was beyond the manufacturer’s original date. Corrected. Zucchini observed in the walk-in cooler area, slimy to the touch / spoiled / moldy and is adulterated. Corrected. Severely dented, swollen, distressed canned items observed in dry storage area are and intended for use or sale in the food facility. Corrected. Multiple foods were held at ambient temperatures, in the service area and dry storage area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Labels on products state refrigerate after opening. Deli meat was held at 48°F, in the Bain Marie in the Deli area, rather than 41°F or below as required. Observed single-use containers at the salad bar not stored inverted. Corrected. Observed clean food equipment and/or utensils in the kitchen area, stored uncovered or not inverted. Corrected. Surface of water heater for warewash machine and on plug on cookline – chest freezer / microwave is cracked and/or repaired with materials unapproved for food equipment. Dock door located in the kitchen area of the food facility has a gap and does not protect against the entry of insects, rodents, and other animals. No sign or poster posted at the handwash sink in the warewashing area to remind food employees to wash their hands. Corrected. Working containers in mop area, used for storing chemicals taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On September 15, 2025, Chick-fil-A #02348, located at 4675 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: The grout between the tiles in the mop sink is deteriorated creating an area for water and food debris to accumulate. Observed an accumulation of water and old food debris on the floor under the shelving units in the walk-in cooler.

On September 16, 2025, Taqueria Jimenez #366266, located at 810 Oley Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Commercially processed ready to eat food, located in the cooler, and held more than 48 hours, is not being marked with the date it was opened.

On September 16, 2025, National Fresh Supermarket, located at 810 Oley Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Observed cardboard being utilized as a floor covering. Observed frozen food stored directly on the floor in freezer area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. Toilet room soap dispenser and paper towel dispenser was both empty.

On September 16, 2025, McDonald’s of Exeter #12062, located at 5370 Perkiomen Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Paper towel dispenser empty at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. Corrected.

On September 16, 2025, Brooklyn Place, located at 101 Fifth Avenue, West Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: The facility is listed as out of compliance. Sanitizer used to clean/sanitize equipment and utensils is not available for use during all hours of operation. The food facility does not have the original certificate for the certified food employee posted in public view. Observed in-use knives and /or cleavers stored between table edges, an area not easily cleaned & sanitized. Soap was not available at the handwash sink in the kitchen area. The handwash sink in the kitchen area was blocked by a chest freezer and was not easily accessible at all times for employee use. Working containers (spray bottles) in the kitchen area, used for storing chemicals, cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Observed several food items stored directly on the floor in the side storage room, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required.

On September 17, 2025, Taqueria El Carreton Mexican Food #2, located at 817 Oley Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, cooler, is not being date marked. Prepped Food in the cooler and the bain marie area stored open with no covering. Observed prepped food stored directly on the floor in cooler area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. No hand soap in the men’s room. Mops are not being hung to air dry.

On September 17, 2025, Sunrise Mt Penn Deli, located at 232 Carsonia Avenue, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Lights are not shielded or shatter proof over the back food preparation area. Food facility does not have the correct type of sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration for the sanitizer they are using at the 3-compartment sink.

On September 17, 2025, Chapel Hill Golf Course, located at 2023 Old Lancaster Pike, Sinking Spring, was inspected and found with the following violation: The interior kick plate of the ice machine, a food contact surface, was observed to pink mold/slime and was not clean to sight and touch. Soda nozzle at the bar area, a food contact surface, was observed to have slime build up and was not clean to sight and touch. Food facility has an employee who held a Certified Food Manager certificate; however, the certificate has expired (8/29/2024) and is no longer valid. The handwash sink in the kitchen area does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air-drying device.

On September 17, 2025, Ave Maria Deli and Grocery, located at 706 North 9th Street, Reading, was inspected and found with the following violation: Prepped Food in the bain marie area stored open with no covering. Old food residue, dishes and utensils observed in the handwash sink, indicating uses other than handwashing. The handwashing sink in the prep area was not operable. Potentially hazardous ready-to-eat food prepared in the food facility and held for more than 48 hours, located in the bain marie, is not being date marked.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Zion Farm BBQ in Mohnton, Little Oley Tavern in Boyertown, La Alta Gracia Grocery in Reading, Boyertown Middle School West, Boyertown Elementary School, Dollar Tree #1682 in Reading, Dollar Tree #4658 in Temple, Trinity Bible Fellowship Church in Blandon, Redner’s Quick Stop #74 in Muhlenberg Township, Pretzel Revolution in Temple Oneida Farm Market in Elverson, Muhlenberg SD Middle School, Fleetwood Area SD Andrew Maier Elementary School, Terra Pacem Winery in Boyertown, St. Catharine of Siena School, Penn Street Pizza in Reading, Pal’ Patio Fusion Cuisine & Grill in Wyomissing, Mae Cakery in Boyertown, Pilot Travel Center #518 in Frystown, Oley Fire Company in Oley, Manor Golf Club in Sinking Spring, Maindencreek Distributing in Blandon, El Encanto Bakery Inc. in Reading, Conrad Weiser SD West Elementary.
