It’s been almost a year since the Reading Public Museum lost one of its iconic sculptures, Itzamna Stella, due to flooding. After months of reconditioning, the museum unveiled the refurbished sculpture on Thursday, re-installing it near the museums entrance.
Following a severe storm in June 2019, high flood waters on the Wyomissing Creek uprooted and floated the Itzamna Stella sculpture down stream. The sculpture was found days later by kayakers miles away from the museum.
Originally mounted to a concrete pad by the creek, the sculpture now sites on the left side of the museum near the car loop.
Constructed by artist Hans van de Bovenkamp, the Itzamna Stella sculpture was dedicated in 2001 and is made from fabricated steel, measuring 9 feet tall by 2 feet wide.
