Berks County is expected to face dangerously high temperatures early next week, as the National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch in effect from Sunday morning through Wednesday evening.
According to forecasters, heat index values could climb as high as 108 degrees during the day. Overnight temperatures will offer little relief, with lows in urban areas hovering near 80 degrees. The heat is expected to have a cumulative effect on the body throughout the multi-day event, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The National Weather Service urges residents to take necessary precautions, including drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, avoiding direct sun exposure, and checking in on elderly family members and neighbors.
Officials are also reminding the public never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, warning that interior temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
Berks County residents are advised to monitor local forecasts and heat advisories in the coming days and prepare now for the upcoming period of extreme weather.
