Torrential downpour leads to flash flooding in Muhlenberg Township

Heavy rain had a major effect on Muhlenberg Township Friday afternoon. Rain developed over the area and caused flash flooding leaving several roads closed and drivers stranded.

Areas that flooded included Route 12 highway between Pottsville Pike and 5th Street Highway, a portion of North 5th Street Highway near the Plaza 222 shopping center and Water Street.

During the downpour, several drivers became stuck in flood water and eventually needed to be towed. No injuries were initially reported.

According to the National Weather Service, a record daily rainfall of 2.39 inches was set at the Reading Regional Airport. This breaks the old record of 2.10 inches set back in 1984. Precipitation records for the Reading area extend back to 1869.
