The West Reading Police Department is reminding pedestrians and drivers to remain alert and follow traffic safety practices while traveling throughout the borough.
In a pedestrian safety alert, police encouraged those traveling on foot to remain visible, particularly at night and in low-light conditions, by wearing bright or reflective clothing. Pedestrians should also obey traffic signals, signs and pavement markings and use crosswalks whenever possible.
Police also advised pedestrians to avoid distractions such as using phones or listening to music while walking. Before crossing a street, pedestrians should look for approaching vehicles and make eye contact with drivers.
Drivers are being asked to slow down and be prepared to stop for pedestrians, particularly in school zones and areas with high foot traffic. Motorists should yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections and avoid distractions while behind the wheel.
The department also encouraged drivers to anticipate pedestrians and remain patient when traveling through areas where people may be crossing the roadway.
“By working together, we can create a safer environment for everyone in our community,” the department said. “Remember, safety is a shared responsibility!”
