Moldy hotdog buns, slicer blade with food residue: Restaurant Inspections, Apr. 19, 2024

The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has posted an updated list of recent Retail Food Inspection Reports for restaurants and food handlers in Berks County. Inspections are a “snapshot” of the day and time of the inspection. Violations are recorded but are often corrected on the spot prior to the inspector leaving the facility. An inspection was conducted at Munchiez at the Shillington Farmers Market on April 5, 2024, located at 10 S Summit AVE Reading, PA 19607. Food dispensing utensil in the ice machine observed stored in the food and not with handle above the top of the food and the container. Corrected. Observed a residue build up on the food contact surfaces of the ice machine.

On April 5, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Louies Kitchen and Bar located at 12 Village Center Drive Reading, PA 19607. Soda nozzle to the left of the bar entrance, a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Corrected. Working containers in back prep area, used for storing cleaners taken from bulk supplies, were not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On April 5, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Little Caesars located at 2851 Perkiomen Ave Reading, PA 19606. The floor/wall juncture along the wall near the dough pressing machine is not coved and closed to 1/32 inch. There are holes and/or gaps in the wall and coving in this area.

On April 5, 2024, an inspection was performed at Hartranft Poultry & Seafood located in the Shillington Farmers Market, 10 South Summit Ave Shillington, PA 19607. The facility was listed as out of compliance. Food Employee observed changing tasks that may have contaminated hands without a proper handwash in-between. Corrected. Coats stored on meat grinder. Corrected. Several deli salads prepared in the facility, a ready to eat time/temperature control for safety food, in the deli case area, was not compliant with datemarking by being labeled with a discard or use by date of no more than 7 days. Corrected. Deli slicer blade a food contact surface, was observed to have food residue and was not clean to sight and touch. Non-food contact surfaces not cleaned at a frequency to preclude accumulation of dirt and soil. Shelves of reach in refrigerators have old food/dirt residue build up and must be cleaned.

On April 5, 2024, an inspection was conducted at China Hut Restaurant located at 21 Franklin ST Fleetwood, PA 19522. Food dispensing utensil in bulk foods (flour/rice) observed stored in the food and without a handle. Corrected. Observed cases of sauces and food packaging stored directly on the floor in the dry storage area, rather than 6 inches off of the floor as required. The handwash sink in the employee restroom does not have single use towels, continuous towels, or air-drying device. Corrected. Spray bottle in dish area, used for storing chemical from bulk supplies, was not marked with the common name of the chemical. Corrected.

On April 5, 2024, an inspection was performed at Amato’s located at 2210 Main Street Centerport, PA 19516. Cup without a handle observed stored in the food in a bulk container. Corrected. Observed in-use knife stored between table edges or between tables, an area not easily cleanable & sanitized. Corrected.

On April 8, 2024, an inspection was conducted at Rita’s of Hamburg, 400 S 4th Street Hamburg, PA 19526. Food contact surface of two spatulas is not smooth, easily cleanable and/or resistant to pitting, cracking or scratching. Corrected.

On April 8, 2024, an inspection was performed at Antojitos Cielito Lindo located at 519 S 18th Street Reading, PA 19606. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips to determine appropriate sanitizer concentration. Food facility has an employee that has taken food safety training program; however, the food safety program was not an ANSI/CFP accredited Certified Food Manager program. Owner has a Food Handler certificate and is in the process of getting a Food Manager certificate.

On April 10, 2024, an inspection was conducted at the Lyons Fire Company #1 located at 1100 Park Ave Lyons Station, PA 19536. A package of hot dog buns observed in the walk-in cooler area had 2 moldy buns. Corrected.

On April 12, 2024, an inspection was performed at Jim Neidermyer Poultry & Deli located at 740 Noble Street Kutztown, PA 19530. Food facility does not have available sanitizer test strips or test kit to determine appropriate chlorine sanitizer concentration.

Several other restaurants were inspected during this time period with no violations reported: Shillington Burger & More in Shillington, Ollie’s Tavern in Shoemakersville, Little Caesars in Shillington, Wendy’s in West Reading, Wawa in Hamburg, Rite Aid in Kutztown, Julie’s Restaurant in Sinking Spring, Tilden Elementary in Hamburg, Fry Daddy’s in Kutztown and Schell’s Drive In in Muhlenberg Township.
